snes pilot wings
#296213 - 09/20/12 11:40 PM

Sorry if this is the wrong place or forbidden to talk about snes games here. I was just wondering if anybody can get this game running in mess? Everything works fine but right when you are ready to play the game there is no video all I have is the sound. Is this an issue with the mess emulating this game?

Thanks

Use the console setname "snesdsp" in MESS. Normal SNES sets do not have DSP-1 emulation (required for this game a several others). It's playable to a point, but there are graphic errors which are covered with the warning screen you type OK on.

due to old core restrictions, carts which special chips (like Pilotwings) have to be loaded in specialized drivers which adds the chip emulation

DSP1/4 --> snesdsp [like in this case]
SuperFX --> snessfx
ST-010 --> snesst10
ST-011 --> snesst11

If I ever manage to finish my current work on NES carts (which will allow for on-cart sound chips to be properly emulated), SNES add-on chips will be next target of legacy code to be updated to modern standard

The warning screen that the thread starter probably didn't read....

but in this case, the warning screen does not apply at all
pilotwings is fully playable, once you use the driver emulating the additional DSP-1 chip

Sorry, not in my most recent testing which is why I pointed out the flags on that specific drivers. Kale was looking into it the last time he had his head stuck up SNES's innards.

oh god, who break it again?
last I tried it, it was working, but it was ages ago.

super mario kart still work though, so probably DSP math is fine...

Really, don't BARBARIZE the timings this time around if you really want to fix it. Find a damn solution to the problem or don't do anything, try to compare it with BSNES or whatever (I'm pretty sure that we still ain't there timing wise).

It worked before, it doesn't now, it's *your* timings that broke it if it's bad now.

erm... you keep accusing me to touch the snes timing, but apart from an aborted attempt to change DMA behavior which did not work well (and lived only shortly) I basically never touched the timing.
it's always been you which added/removed cycle delays (usually with pretty good effects, of course, I'm not complaining...)

so be assured that I won't work on the timings this time either (mainly because I'm too busy with NES carts code and have no time for SNES)

Well, I give up for now. It WAS working very well when I've implemented it and then, after some time, it started to ripe with the SAME exact code. wtf is happening, I don't know ...
