I'm totally confused.
How is the sale of drinks with more than 20% ethanol (grain alcohol) related to illegally produced products containing methanol (wood alcohol), which is poisonous?
How is banning one supposed to stop the other? I don't get it.
In fact, I just looked at the comments on the article and someone said almost the same thing...

Response comparing this to similar ... actions taken by ...other governments... banning things in the wake of incidents not involving those things.

My Czech in-laws just came back from Prague and were talking about this. There is a very strong plum brandy called slivovic (sliv-o-vitz) that the Czechs are famous for. Some douchbags were putting methanol in some bootleg slivovic and people started getting really sick and dying.
I doubt this ban will stay in effect for long. The Czechs like their drinking. They have vodka and absinthe bars all over the city of Prague, and they generate a lot of tourist dollars.
This measure is probably in effect until the bootleg hootch can be found and destroyed.
