Blocking particular words won't stop people and you know it. They'll just find other ways to get their meaning across.

I don't agree. It's possible to block enough that they will give up and take it elsewhere.

This sums up most arguments on this board the internet...

http://xkcd.com/386/

It has gotten pretty easy to figure out who to skip if you do not want to be pissed off... As pretty much they only post to piss others off... Some seem to think this is their personal playground to piss others off.

Besides we all just skim for Andrew posts anyway

It's not so much about being wrong as it is, why bring it here. It's an abuse of us writing "off-topic". If you're passionate about religion or politics great, there are lots of boards out there to talk all you want on. Why here. We don't want drama here.

But fascism is?

Anarchy would be better, but hopefully we can regulate ourselves being (allegedly) mature adults. I find some of the topics like what DR makes from time to time annoying, but I can handle 'em. Ignoring stuff like that is easy enough. Or perhaps I have some special ability to let things like that roll off my back, forget about it and move on.

I'm just saying that an all out ban is just silly (imo)... almost childish. But if it's enforced then I can be down with that. Whatever.

I don't think that's an accurate word, it's an exaggeration to try and make your stance stronger. There is modding/admining on all messageboards on the web pretty much, almost none of them are "free speech". And it's funny to me to hear people always think the 1st amendment applies to everything on the web. It's a reality check for them but it doesn't. You start/own a website and you have the authority/speech on it, and everything else is some sort of hierarchy.

I think all the politics and people screaming at each other lowers the overall enjoyment a lot of people can get from reading MW. It's supposed to be about mame and somehow we've got all this...

Maybe so. I'm interested to see how the poll turns out regardless.

Take the fark filter approach. Certain keywords are selectively replaced with other words.

For instance:

I think Muslims are terrible >> I Think cookies are terrible

Jesus loves me >> Lucy Pinder loves me

Obama is a socialist >> Elmo is a Firefighter

I think the better aproach is to have an "Ignore User" button like several other forums have, so you don't see that person's posts.

The offended person has to initiate the ignoring. I'd be more comfortable with that.

Perhaps. But a troll will troll no matter what. They get off on twisting others up. They will use baiting arguments and phrases such as 'I have more information here that would make you cry'. Their end game is to piss you off. Thats it. You are pissed they 'win'. Then that comic comes into play as others do not realize they are being baited. I have several good examples of recent posts that do exactly that here (I am sure you do as well). I read them and deliberately did not respond. For to do so feeds the troll.

You give them any sort of satisfaction at any point and they will come back forever to get more. That is 'their fun'. The rest of us can burn in hell for all they care. They are having fun. They then hide behind 'its free speech' as if that somehow shields them from being a jerk.

I propose you are going to have to be arbitrary on how you do things. Basically it pisses you off or you think the 'fun is done'. Lock the thread. They reopen with a secondary thread warn them. They keep it up just kickban them for a few days... I pick the word arbitrary very deliberately. As unless you can come up with a very exact set of rules you will always have those who want to push it. Such as what happened with the nudity ban. You will have those trying to worm their way around the rules just to continue to troll.

Honestly the looney bin is one of the few web boards I read anymore. The trolling on the other ones was too much. The looney bin you at least know who tend to do it as the audience is fairly small and I can ignore it.

Well we can still make it better... The War Room Shithole to offload the trolling and get past the free speech whiner arguments.

That's just bizarre. Why am I not surprised businesses are always exempt? They own everything else in this country.

Typical...

You start a business and have your employees enjoy "free speech" cursing at customers and let me know how profitable it is.

Well.... I have to admit I've contributed to that. I could ignore geopolitical posts instead of contributing to them. I agree it sucks the fun out of a fun forum. However you decide to handle it, I'll do my part and stick to the titties.

They're exempt because the handful of people who wrote the Constitution back in the 18th century were smarter than most politicians today, and wrote a document limiting the fed's power. It wasn't even supposed to restrict state governments.
