Just memory back-up for everything. The real killer is the 3V lithium one. It backs up the boot rom. It holds the boards ID & version code and the beginning of the boot code. If that battery fails or that chip is removed... dead... And you need a zero chip to re-program it to boot again.

The devs and dumpers have been dealing with suicide batteries for years, I am sure they can handle this one.

I don't see extensive work being done to read this security code out, if it's even still alive. That type of work gets done for stuff like Free Kick and CPS2 and then if the same work can get freebie-passed down to other stuff like gamblers then it does, but nobody is going to rack their brain for an extended amount of time over custom hardware for a generic gambler. At least, I don't think they will. Someone is looking into emulating the VLC dumps though. I would guess the security would somehow just get simulated or bypassed.
