And so you have it

Quote:
Let the games begin 21 Aug 2012
I am happy to announce that from now on, we have public read MAME/MESS merged server located at : svn://dspnet.fr/mame/trunk
So in future please send contributions based on latest version found there.
We are still going to create patches and releases as before, but hopefully this will make better communication with end users and potential contributors.

Just to clarify some things: This svn is the live MAME and MESS updates. You may create personal builds based on this, but you cannot complain of any new bugs unless they appear in an official release. Mametesters will not accept bug reports based on new changes. Also, MESS external artwork is not in the new svn, you will need to keep your own backup of this.

Is MAME and MESS together in that source? Very confusing about this.

Still not working for me... a get the generic "This webpage cannot be displayed" error when I click on it.
Tried in both chrome and IE. It there a http address, because I believe several isps block svn addresses. It's going to be pretty darn akward to have mame's source in a location that some people can't get to.
Also perhaps it's the .fr address? Are you guys in the states?

It isn't meant to be clicked on... you must use a svn client (such as Tortoise) to connect to that link.

Well then why would you put it in a link?
Ugh... I remember svn clients.... I doubt there will be many more code submissions by me.

for Windows: - download and install TortoiseSVN http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads.html - create empty folder, right click it and select "SVN Checkout" - in checkout window "URL of repository:" must be "svn://dspnet.fr/mame/trunk" also check "checkout directory" so it points folder you want - press OK
for getting updates - Rclick repo folder and select "SVN Update"
I think all this is simple enough

Some OS's can interpret the web links into their utilities and launch their SVN installs, I imagine. That and the board software/browsers decide what looks like a link or not.
> Ugh... I remember svn clients.... I doubt there will be many more code submissions by > me.
Both projects will still publish periodic U updates and numeric releases. The combined sources also continues to have a GIT mirror at http://git.redump.net/mame , if you prefer that. You can still use the old methods of taking the source updates as released and use those as a source base against your patches. Just expect delay or rejection in your code submissions if the source tree has been modified too greatly where your patches won't apply cleanly without modification.
You make it sound like a public read-only SVN server of the MAME/MESS trees is the worse thing to happen in the history of the project.. if it can bring you to proclaiming you'll likely never submit code again because of it.

Agreed - really not understanding your point of view on this Howard, I have to assume there's some confusion or misconception on your part. Aside from the MESS merger, this is the same as it has been done behind the scenes 6 months ago, a year ago, even longer. If you weren't using it, then you were making your source patches against the U-releases - and that is still supported. It's just that: if you want to make your source patches against bleeding edge, and compile/test it with bleeding edge, now it's easier for you to do so.

In other words, nothing has been lost - all the old ways still work. However much has been gained, and now MAME users have the advantages that MESS has had for years.

Hopefully we can take this as a partial embracing of UME ;p
Glad to have an alternative to the GIT repository...found it to be slow and prone to time out...GIT for public read-only was almost overkill.
I assume they will find a place for the SYSTEM.DAT to live as well. Noticed both WHATSNEW.TXT were gone as well.

Sorry guys but it's news to me. It's probably news to most occasional devs like myself as well. Go over to mamedev.org..... with the exception of the recent blog entry try to find a mention of a svn server anywhere....even in the developer docs. I've submitted changes/tweaks once in a blue moon for over 10 years now.
I'm not sure whre all the hate is coming from either... I'm just not fond of the SVN system.

The svn wasn't mentioned before, because it was private and somewhat secret. But as Stiletto said, you are safe to ignore the svn and do what you did before. Nothing has been removed.

no secret. it has been mentioned several times on these same boards that the development was being handled through svn, both during Aaron, Kale and Micko management.
it was just private, and not even so much given that it's been several months that the git mirror has been advertised by Haze...
