2 million in Atari Star Wars (MAME + with a mouse)
#291383 - 07/10/12 07:39 AM

This score is nothing special but it shows the trench run in later levels... I haven't seen such video on Youtube before.

I compensated the increased difficulty between yoke and mouse by adding 3 extra shields after completing the level from the dip switch settings.

I was able to score over 30 million in the arcade machine but I simply can't get same kind of precision from a mouse, no matter how much I play with the MAME analog settings. The towers pose a problem with the mouse (for me), not the trench run which is pretty much always the same combo of levels 8, 9 and 10.

This game is one of my all time favorite arcades.

Use 480pt (HQ resolution). Otherwise the video looks really bad.

Enjoy!

Just a thought... I've never actually tried it, but it seems like an analog flight stick (with some tweaking) would give you a much better feel than trying to play with the mouse. Something like one of these would be relatively cheap and would make it a lot more enjoyable to play.

Or you can go more expensive, and maybe this would work (well):

Nice run! The higher-level trench runs are indeed rarely seen.

What's the first music? I recognize it as an remix of a really old .MOD (probably original Karsten Obarski SoundTracker), but I don't remember the name. And I'd love to know where to get the remix

All songs are by Jan Hammer. The all-around man from Mahavishnu Orchestra. His music was used in the Miami Vice TV Show.

I would have used the genuine game sounds but there was some problem and the audio wasn't recorded.

First song is a remix of "Forever Tonight".

Probably. The problem with mouse is the laser towers part... sometimes you have to make an extremely fast move to left/right and then return back to center. The precision isn't there... and all mistakes in the video (trench run) were also caused by the mouse. The aim is pretty difficult because you have to use extremely high analog speed.

With yoke I can play this game as long as I want. There is no substitute for that. You can play the sequel, ESB with a mouse just ok though.

The price is quite greasy for just one game (I never cared for Return of the Jedi). Otherwise I'd already own one.

Does that also move forward/backward like the yoke?

I thought I recognised it from the Amiga days too.
It has been covered at least twice.

I don't know if this is the one I remember, I'd have to go through all my disks.
It's unlikely the one as it appears to be from '97.

This one is slower, seems less familiar.

Maybe the one I remember was a chip tune from a crack intro.

This is the original piece.

Appeared in the album Jan Hammer: Escape from Television.

I had never heard of that remix before but it sounded cool and suited well for the vid.

That's the closest of the two to the one I remember, but I don't think it's exactly the same one. The version I first heard was Henrik Gudat's 14-track IIgs SoundSmith conversion and all of those came from early ST-xx disks so this one's probably still too new.

To kind of square the circle on this off-topic excursion, here's a from-hardware recording I found of the IIgs SoundSmith version. Most of these conversions were done as if the MODs were NTSC when they really were PAL, so the pitch and tempo are a bit higher than the original MODs will sound like, but you get the idea. (Notably, the instruments aren't the same as either of the mods smf found).

ROFLllllllllllll There were loads of crazy / funny / camp ads like this in the 70's / 80's.

Nothing, no matter how crazy, can compare to those hideous Steve Balmer Microsoft TV ads though - those were on another level.
