DU Update: This is Progress!?
#291234 - 07/08/12 07:14 PM

We got Star Horse Progress, part of the long running (haw) gambling series. Progress is pretty much from the middle of the Star Horse series, which has been going on for more than a decade now. The newest one came out last year.

We've come a long way since Quarter Horse. :-)

Judging by all the equipment needed for Star Horse Progress that will be a huge challenge to get emulated.

Could you win quarters in Quarter Horse?

I didn't see much of the gameplay of Quarter Horse back in the day. This was back when I was around 10-years-old and a QH was set up alongside the poker machines down at the VFW in Brackenridge, PA. But it was interesting to see actual horse racing footage playing on a machine that looked just like any other poker machine.

So, more than likely, you could get paid out by the proprietor. Not just in quarters, though. I don't know if there were versions rigged up with coin hoppers to allow immediate payouts.

Ah, memories. :-)

Being a laser disc game, I guess you could memorize all the sequences and win 100%.

That's a possibility. There's only so much video that a LaserDisc can hold, even if both sides were used. What I don't know is how long each race took and if the ROMs employed some extra tricks to make it appear that there was no pattern to cut down on memorization.

Most of the tech info on QH, including flyers and other detailed stuff, is available here.

Likewise, the emulation of QH in MAME is incomplete (see sets quarterh, quarterha, quarterhb). The LaserDisc needs dumped and the hardware emulation needs perfected. And it looks like MAWS is down so that's all the info I can dig up at the moment.

Anyway, I think I veered this topic that was supposed to be about Sega's huge elaborate horse racing simulator right into the ditch.

Just in case FYI.
If somebody wants to (and can get in touch with this guy) you can buy your own:

http://www.alibaba.com/product-free/105404345/Quarter_Horse_Laser_Player_Emulator.html

Looks like they've just stuck the LD onto a flash drive. I was curious as to how much they wanted for 1 but have never got a reply. I've also seen the disc. Side 1 has the image on it and seems to have VERY little footage. After all, how much can you film in 1 afternoon at the track? Side 2 is only an image that says something like DATA IS ON SIDE 1. Far enough off the rails for now.

Later...

Pessimist: Oh, this can't get any worse!
Optimist: Yes, it can!

You wouldn't need to be physically at the track. I do recall that Meadowlands and some other racing park (Pembroke?) used to air all the races in the clear via C-Band satellite from the early-to-late '80s. So anyone with a big ol' dish at the time and a decent VCR could have hours of footage onhand.

So now I'm wondering if there was actually more than one LaserDisc available. Different runs, different pressings. It would have been an interesting way to get around memorization simply by selecting a random LaserDisc from at least five different LaserDisc batches. But that would also assume that Quarter Horse was a very big seller and had a decent manufacturing run (conservatively, at least 1000 units).

(Or at least 9000.) ;-)

But back to the Sega and other horse racing sims that use similar 3-D rendering of the track and horses. :-) Most of the racing environment can be simulated. Throw in infinite camera angles and current racing data and stats and there's no need for any real footage.

I don't understand the concern. I'm sure it ran like every other gambling game and was set to pay out a small percentage and used something along the lines of a random number generator and then plays a winning or losing clip. I'm sure you couldn't memorize it anymore than you could a cherry master.
