I'm trying to play San Francisco Rush 2049 on MAME 0.146b, but I can't get it to work at all, it says the ROM is not working, and I have both the chd and the rom file. I loved this game when I was a kid, and now I wanted to enjoy it again, what do I do?

Learn how to write source code for MAME and fix it.

It's a veeeeeery long process... Try this game in N64 emulator instead.

Get a degree in computer science as well as a degree in electronics/electrical engineering from your local college or university. Or train yourself with the equivalent.

Regarding vegas.c games: http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php/GNW#vegas
Specifically, the issue with this game is it's video emulation. The current 3dfx voodoo emulation has some basic support for the Banshee, but it is pretty minimal. The tricky bit is that the Banshee (and later, the Voodoo 3) have integrated 2D and 3D capabilities, so we need to emulate at least part of a VGA controller in addition to the 3D. These boards also had some new features that require some addition internal reworking of the Voodoo driver.

The screen that says the ROM is not working, what does it say exactly? attach a photo/screenshot, or write here what it says, word for word.

If you rush, you should get your computer science degree by 2049....

You know what's sad? He was probably born about the same time as the Banshee. (And that I probably still have 1 in a pile of stuff around here...)

Pessimist: Oh, this can't get any worse!
Optimist: Yes, it can!

You could get a copy of Midway Arcade Treasures 3 on PS2/Xbox/Gamecube (or the Deluxe Edition on PC) and play it that way. Although that's a port of the Dreamcast version, not the arcade original.
Or try Nitronic Rush, which recreates the stunt mode of Dreamcast 2049: http://nitronic-rush.com/

I’m convinced Mario is a hobo.
He wakes up everyday in the same clothes, runs around in sewers, and collects coins for a living.
At the end of the day, he uses the coins to buy mushrooms
