He was part of several 'power pop' type bands in Cleveland (The Urge, and Exotic Birds come to mind). The industrial 'hardcore' stuff only came along after he saw bands like Front Line Assembly, Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb were starting to make money with their music. He and Jourgensen jumped ship from pop to industrial at about the same time.
