Wrong controller for The Tin Star (Taito 1983)

MAME listed a Double 8-way Joystick for Tin Star (Taito 1983).
But the control panel has a paddle and a 8-way Joystick. Correct?

There were 8 positions it snapped into. It wasn't analog like Tron. Not sure what the answer is but any change is not going to make it any easier to play.

They are rotary dials, 8 position, turn and push to fire controls. Wild Western, Front Line and Tin Star all seem to share the same style of controls. Without the manuals handy, I have to assume each direction of the rotary dial is a direction, which changes the input port in much the same way as a joystick would based on it's direction. Neither of the games have been all that playable outside of the arcade control panel.
