CHDman FE & iniCreator
#284596 - 05/01/12 09:16 PM

As MAMErenSET collaboration with Guy Peters continues to make small but very useful utilities for MAME/MESS.
This time they are two different programs together:

CHDman FE v1.0 (484 downloads 05/19/2012 10:00am)
-----------------
Front-end oriented to less experienced users (or for those lazy people) that allows to perform the main functions of CHDman but very useful, the ability to perform batch operations.

iniCreator v1.0 (147 downloads 05/19/2012 10:00am)
----------------
This program does one thing only: create ini file (MAME/MESS compatible) from a folder specified by the user. Simple but often useful.

Both are downloadable from this new page of my site: progetto-SNAPS Tools.
Try them and let me know your impressions.

This is a great idea. I've pushed for general MAME/MESS frontends to support CHDman, but few do

This is really cool, specially the CHD one... As for the INI program, I'll check it tomorrow only.

Congrats for you contributions, Pisa. They're very much appreciated indeed.

Very nice indeed!

I have thought about a chdman FE before, but just in musing never thought that it would happen or dared venture the idea for fear of ridicule. lol

One thing that I think would be a nice addition though, is for your FE to show what Ver. of chdman it found and is using.

Again just a thought.

I will definitely give it a try the next time I need to use chdman!

I agreed with you. It is not something to be lazy. Some people are not familiar to command prompt which is nothing wrong and this really helps a lot.

By the way... I need chdman.exe for 145u7 please ? Thanks.

I am so loving it. It is much quicker and scanned for 3 hours but not all roms are readable. I noticed some didnt show up on the list in mame at all. Yes, I deleted cfg files. Hmm.

From what I heard nearly all CHD's based off of GDI's (Naomi, Atomiswave,...) sort of need to be redone to account for pre-gap and such.

So maybe diff's will be released for those...so that not all is lost.

yeah, it's in whatsnew_0145u5

Marked all GD-ROMs except Under Defeat as BAD_DUMP. These need to be
re-converted to CHD from the .GDI source with current CHDMAN

Well I just did a quick scan of bdrdown and it's showing all three tracks...so are we just needing fresh GDI index's to remake the CHD after extracting the tracks?

Or was there some sort of data loss that I'm not aware of?

Granted that would be weird given that when I gabbed with R. Belmont about my CHD to GDI app...things turned out perfect other than having to change the endian on audio tracks if I recall.

hmmm...now where the hell did I put that app.

*Update*

Ahha...thank god for online backups.

So all we need is a ClrMamePro DAT of the original GDI dumps and we are in biz.

Hmm can't seem to post a link to my app.

unfortunately, something seems bugged with using info option as It seems to stop at different points before it completes the entire job. I tried the 422 directories of 145 set and it never completely finishes. Also, separating the directories so only 50 directories in a folder didn't seem to make a difference and it stops at random points.

I also notice unlike the other options that CHDMan FE window drops from the screen and taskbar and there is no progress bars going during info operation.

[EDIT] actually it could be that chdman hangs which is the reason the job randomly doesn't finish. There is bug report on mametesters about the hanging of chdman.

Other info (thanks to Kodiak):

There is a Cores option. Setting this to one less than the total cores you have in your CPU. Will typically allow your system to still be largely useful. Where otherwise CHDman would bog down the system to where it's frustrating to use.
For those with a single core. Once you start running the Update operation, you can set the priority of CHDman. Setting it to Low will typically allow you to still use your system, while CHDman works away in the background.
Of course setting a lower priority & fewer cores will of the obvious side effect of taking longer to complete.

Now if the source & destination folders are set the same. The original CHD will be replaced, if a different destination location is picked the original CHD will be left unharmed.

Info & Verify options are carried out on the source folder; so if you have just carried out an Update which involved a different destination, there is a Swap button to swap source and destination entries.

CHDMan itself will now extract to .GDI. The problem is if you do it with any image other than Border Down you'll get an incorrect GDI (one that likely will still work with emulators, but has a decent chance of fucking up the net-sender at least).

Well what about using an older CHDman...that app that I got your help on a year ago, well Q&A really...I was reverting Dreamcast GDI CHD's fine after you corrected me about the endian issue, all hash's turned out fine.

Granted I needed a ClrMamePro Dat of the original dumps, since the CHDman of the day created just a CUE and a monolithic BIN file, so I had to slice and dice, then change the endian on the proper tracks...but the result was matching hash's to that of the original dump.

Was there something done different with Naomi & Atomiswave GDI's?

> Granted I needed a ClrMamePro Dat of the original dumps,

And that's why you got matching hashes.

Now everyone can, without dat files. Also, the emulation now knows the correct length of each track.

chdman packaged with 147 seems bugged. A bug report has been submitted to MT
