DU Update: Borg Assimilation
#282152 - 04/11/12 07:06 PM

We got a motherboard for Star Trek: Voyager. The hard drive has been dumped for a long time but dumps of the bioses are also needed, which we now have secured. The motherboard is missing its CPU so for now we will only know a few that it could be (the range the motherboard supports). So if you have the game or know someone who has it, if you can find out the exact CPU type, let me know. But anyway, we can now make a skeleton driver for the game and have all of its data archived in MAME.

I never even knew this game existed. It looks to be terribly fun... the key word there being terrible.

[nerd mode]

As a Star Trek Fan I'm pretty sure I should be offended.

1. The game should use phazers, not pistols.
2. Borg don't attack unless you directly interfere with them.
3. Phazers only work on the Borg for a few shots, then they adapt and their shielding kicks in.
4. Wtf? Did they assimilate Doom sprites?

[/nerd mode]

I've played it. It's pretty well flawed. Still part of arcade and Star Trek history, my 2 cents.

I saw the game at a local arcade but never played it. It would be interesting to see it running in MAME.

Thanks for "assimilating" it!

I'm sure its better than Street Fighter the movie (arcade) or Time Killers.

No, but there were three Star Trek Voyager PC games made that used the Quake 3 engine: Elite Force, an expansion pack, and Elite Force 2.

For a moment there, I thought these were based on those games, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Quote:

Star Trek: Voyager is an arcade gun-shooting game in the grand tradition of Area 51, Virtua Cop and The House of the Dead. Unlike those games, though, it's populated by original alien adversaries designed exclusively for the Star Trek universe by the creators of General Chaos and Rampage World Tour. Named "Video Game Of the Year -2002" by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., this pulse-pounding shoot-em-up can be still be found in finer arcades, movie theaters and entertainment centers everywhere! Developed for Monaco Entertainment and manufactured by Team Play Inc. Programming: Monte Krol, Tim Truesdale, Jeff Nauman, Art: Ben Naumann, Tom Konkol, Mark Seika, Brian Colin. Design: Colin & Nauman

"This client came to us with a license for the STV Intellectual Property and asked us to create an "Area 51-style" gun game. The client had no association with a manufacturer or arcade hardware system, so in addition to the normal challenge of designing the game, we had to design it without knowing the system it would eventually be manufactured for! We actually finished the game almost two years before it was finally manufactured & released.

"Having a few hardcore trekkies on the team helped in a variety of ways... I remember during one trip to Paramount, artist Ben Naumann (no relation) and I were wandering around soundstages when we were confronted by an annoyed, cigar-chomping Levar Burton who demanded to know what we were doing on his closed set. I was speechless, visions of the deal going south running through my head, but Ben blurted out: "Mr Burton! I absolutely loved episode Blah-de-blah, in which Geordie blah-de-blahed blah blah..." Mr. Burton was more than mollified, and after only a few more moments of unabashed gushing fandom later, we made our escape." - BC

Interesting game and find. It seems to resemble an old P4 socket 478 mobo I have.

I definitely will be donating again and soon as the taxman gets his cut

Either she had a negative boob job or she was wearing lots of padding. She doesn't look nearly as big in stuff she's in now.

Yeah the difference being that those games were pretty good. I've still got EF sitting on my desk!

p.s. (By Doom sprites I wasn't referring to the quality or the production company, rather I meant that some of those Borg look less like Star Trek characters and more like Demons and Barons.)

I thought you meant they'd imported models from those ST:Voyager games and had gotten the engines confused. My bad!

Time to alert ID Software, then!

By the way, if this game is really like Doom, it should have an Archvile in it!

Yep, they used to be in those hole in the wall arcades in most Wal-Marts back in the day...

They only had them in for about a year and then Big Buck Hunter took over.

Looking at that startup sequence vid, it looks like the game is running on some flavor of Linux?

It's an interesting choice for a game like that. I didn't realize NVIDIA had workable Linux drivers as early as 2002.

It's much cheaper than an XP license, and the Voyager game doesn't exactly scream "high budget" aside from the license fees to Paramount Anyway, Hollywood and the VFX industry were starting to use Linux as early as 1997 to replace SGI machines so the market was there and Nvidia grabbed it.

(edit) the game was at Pier39 in San Francisco.

Update: It's been replaced with a pair of Arctic Thunders.
Finally got a chance to play. Fun title.
The arcade was buzzing with activity.

Star Trek Voyager is at the AMC 16 Emeryville, CA.
Nice cabinet in an empty arcade.

It also used to be in the small arcade in Hersheypark, Hershey, PA near "Pioneer Town" (or whatever) for the _longest_ while.

They did. My PC was running Slackware and had GeForce 3 Ti200 back then. I remember downloading the binary blob from directly from nVidia site and setting it up from console. After that - Tux Racer!

Don't you mean disagree?

Yeah sometimes the Brog attack, but only if you are a nusiance. They look at humans the way we look at ants. I think you are confusing attacking with assimilating. The borg in those videos were attacking... the borg don't attack without provocation, it's a waste of resources. If your goal is to turn every lifeform in the galaxy into Borg, it doesn't make a lot of sense to go around killing people.

1. The game does use (and refer to) phazers.
2. The Borg are attempting to assimilate. Enterprise is resisting.
3. In this game you do not re-load, you shoot offscreen to re-modulate the phazer frequency.
