Neogeo audio accuracy.

I know the Neogeo driver is supposed to be very accurate but is the audio supposed to be as grainy and harsh as it is? I realize most of the games opted for low resolution samples over FM. Were the quality issues supposed to be masked by low quality speakers, is there hardware filtering missing?, or was that just how it sounded? I would imagine the second option is untrue because this likely wouldn't have been missed.
I only ask because many other systems arcade or otherwise sound a lot smoother despite having 11khz or even much lower samples. Part of the problem is on my end using speakers than emphasize the shortcomings it's just the Neogeo seems to stick out more than others. As a test I'll try sending it through my higher end audio card which itself is already smoother sounding and as another step I can use DSP effects like low-pass filtering to take the edge off.

NeoGeo always sounded like that - it's part of the charm.
