Good news for next Demul 0.5.8 rather than Mame.

Stefano's Linux-only WIP Hikaru emulator.

I'd have thought 68030/68040 emulation would be sown up judging how good uae works.

I'd have thought going fast in a Kia Rio would be sown up judging how fast a Porsche goes.

So, do you know what kind of 3D accelerator is used in the Hikaru ?

Not yet. It seems fairly different from Naomi; might even be Sega custom since there's dedicated 2D support (which is all that works right now).

It's private. It runs seconds per frame and has no controls, no sound, no 3D, and significantly wrong 2D. There's no point to releasing it. I just wanted to demonstrate that the Bieber Rule is in effect for Hikaru: never say never.

At least somebodys giving it a try outside of mame. I like keeping an eye on these early attempts at previously unemulated systems like this and the couple of early stages - xbox emulators that are being attempted. Good luck and well done to any dev of any emulator! (especialy this mame)

I saw one to translate the xbe code into a Windows EXE which makes sense since A: it's a PC in a box. B: It has the same APIs as Windows and DirectX

It actually doesn't. They're similar, but the DirectX implementation is interestingly different to allow somewhat lower-level access to the Nvidia chip (there's no COM, for instance). Better yet, MS changed the ABI in each SDK revision specifically to fuck with people trying to do that sort of thing.

I wouldn't say there's no point in releasing an uplayably slow emulator. At least if the source code's available, then it makes it unlikely that any knowledge gained about the system will be forgotten. And someone might look at it and figure out how to make it more efficient. Or progress in computer speeds could make it playable in a few years.
