Seven facts you never knew about Gauntlet

Interesting that the lawyers actually ended up pushing them to pick a more creative name. The double meaning of "Gauntlet" is infinitely better than "Dungeon".

Also interesting that the arcade business was showing significant signs of trouble as early as 1985. I knew the crash of '83 took out a big chunk of the market, but I didn't realize it was quite that dire.

That was really good. But I can't believe the one retard used up his question on asking the size of the game. He could have just Googled it or used mame. What a waste of space.

I had one of those "I wish I was there" moments whilst watching that. It's cool to know and surprising I watched that the whole way through for me...

It was an experience at the time. I don't think it aged well so I wouldn't put it anywhere near a best game ever list.

Regardless, still one of my favorite arcade games and same goes for the sequels (arcade wise anyway).

Gauntlet is fun, but it's one of those games where the only real long term strategy, as far as I can see, is to shove more quarters in it. Rampage is another one I put in that category. Not that I'm such a skilled player, but I tend to prefer games that aren't quite such cynical quarter suckers.

I will say that Gauntlet is a blast when you have all four people around the cabinet. I played it last year at Funspot with my wife, my buddy, and his son. You really get into it, shouting at each other, trying (and mostly failing) to coordinate all four characters.

The quarter timer system kills it for me now. It was ok to do in the mid 80's. Scream at each other all you want, you're still on a quarter based timer system. I do recall the yelling in the 80's though.

Yeah, I did play this a few times back then and experiened that. Though top-down, the graphics were a draw (although Temple of Doom, game and all, was way cooler, I loved that game).

So, Ed didn't create the game at all. He copied one, but since it was still in-house, I guess there was no issue.

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.

It was humorous to see and hear Ed bring out the processor debate. When I interviewed him for Syzygy Magazine years ago, we had the same discussion off the record. While we weren't really debating, he got pretty intense while talking about it. The "it's gotten easier and faster debate is hogwash" debate is something he definitely feels strongly about.

Thanks for the Link!

I still think the game is fun if you get 4 players playing it. Frag, aren't there a bunch of MAME fans still liking the "3D" Gauntlet games?

I'm still pissed Midway went down before producing the Gauntlet DS game. I really wanted that, and a Midway pack 2 for the PSP, Gauntlet 2 included!

BTW, the Gauntlet 2 on the Game Boy is excellent, even though its grey-scale.
