Demul 0.5.7 is out !

[28 february 2012] DEmul 0.57 WIP Release notes: There is not so much visible changes for more than year of work, but much more internal changes, overall compatibility and graphics quality. First of all, the new SH4 core now have full MMU support for interpreter/dynarec modes, which is slightly improved compatibility and allow to run most of the WinCE games fast enough to play. Second significant change is that GPU subsystem now migrated to the DX11 interface (currently DX10-capable GPU is enough). From this version old DX9 GPU plugins (DXv3 and DXLegacy) are obsolete, although they are still supported and included in current package. Further development of the DX9 plugins is stopped for now. And finally overall interface and usability changes. Emulator is now support 7zip romsets for the bioses and arcade systems, most of the protection/encryption formats for the arcade systems, many many new romsets added during last year and many previously unsupported games or game controllers now are supported. The rest is the sound subsystem have some bug fixes, improving known problems. And yes, totally forgot about... Now we have our proprietary netplay plugin, too new to work fine, and totally untested, so you are welcome to try. No, model 3 emulation still in the same state (except some overall graphics and compatibility improvements, made previously) all work currently suspended in favor to much more active supermodel emulator. Keep up good work, Bart! Not much work was done on the Naomi 2 subsystem too, there is no significant changes, just a little bit of fixes. DX11 support for Naomi 2 still imperfect and have some known issues, don't bother with that. Changelist: - AICA: fixed sound - CORE: added 7zip support for roms - CORE: added mmu support for dynarec - CORE: fixed maple timers - CORE: fixed memcards in WinCE - CORE: fixed save states - CORE: new sh4/ppc cores, improvements, bugfixes - CORE: removed redundant gpu/spu multi threading - GDR: added support for filenames with spaces to GDI - GDR: fixed gdrImage plugin - GDR: fixed thread mode - GDR: removed redundant gdrDemul plugin - GPU: fixed DX3 z-buffer bug - GPU: new DX11 plugin featured order-independency transparency - GPU: new DX11 object list multi-layered render simulation - GPU: new DX11 translucent modifiers, aspect ratio support with hotkeys - GPU: new DX11 two-pass postfilters, texture conversion on the GPU - GUI: new VMS manager merged with maple devices, menu rearranging - MODEL3: added little improvements, still no sound, not a priority since supermodel is here - NAOMI: added M1/M2/M3/M4 decompression implementation, now all protections are emulated (thanks to Adnreas Naive, Deunan Knute, MAME and DU teams) - NAOMI: added jvs standart touchscreen emulation (Touch De Uno! 2) - NET: new proprietary network plugin added - VMS: added default vms file to all ports

And btw, to the author of Demul: ******************************** The GUI gets nicer, specially the Demul logo pleases me! More of that, like selection between available and not available games, like e.g. in FBA emulator, otherwise very nice stuff.

Rendering is broken, no matter what resolution i set it to, the games in full screen are still only being rendered at the standard 640x480.

Ok man i will try. Update: Still not perfect, even we play on fullscreen is bad. We play like a TV with Rain. The graphics on window is more smooth.

I just want to say thank you to CaH4e3 for this amazing emu and your hard efforts. It's appreciated.
CaHe3 just a quick question my fried.....can you tell me what if any racing games are now functioning and run properly with decent speed? Furthermore, is support for force feedback steering wheels in the emu?

finally there's a option to auto-start games in fullscreen also you can stretch games to fit screen, which wasn't possible before.

Its a shame to know DEMUL plans for DX9, when directx 11 relevance on gaming evolution means almost nothing. Theres is no a single youtube video that shows a real difference between the two interfaces, somethines dx9 looks even better than dx11. Changing to WIndows 7 for 5 or 6 atomiswave games is not enough worth, considering all my PC games ask me for more memory ram on windows 7. Directx 11 from my point of view is another silly pretext from Microsoft to force us to migrate windows 7, like IE 9. Besides that, great work and finally Akatsuki BK and "MB Actress Sgain" on the menu, NICE...

Depends on what you want. Apparently this version supports WinCE based games to some degree which the others don't. OTOH some games like Virtua Tennis 2 apparently still show lots of artifacts - and as I mentioned earlier, it's not open source so it has no real long-term potential (from all the horror stories I hear, I'm not making the leap to Windows 8, so Linux support is definitely a big plus in my book especially these days).

demul057.rar.
I initially unzipped it into my existing DEmul folder. I'm guessing there were old settings that were causing my crashes.
p.s., I guess I actually unrared it, not unzipped.

to my knowledge WinCE games work "to some degree" on Makaron since 2009 (even though very slowly and with some crashes if the speed decrease too much) but I base my impression on the snaps dknute posted on his blog since my last Win computer has never been fast enough for DC emulation

IMO it would be nice that someone made an OpenGL 3/4 plugin for Demul, it would free us from the need of upgrading to windows 7/8 and it would open the door to a linux version.

finally I can play KOF 11 and Rumble Fish 2 for the first time... they run at 45 fps which isn't that bad.
anyone know what is the "close emulator" key ? I tried escape and alt+f4 but those aren't working.

If someone could help with info about this, would be nice : - I tried to load ngbc (NeoGeo Battle Coliseum) and it says WRONG CRC32 OF AX3301P01.FMEM01 Every other ATOMISWAVE rom/game I tried works just fine. All roms which I use are from MAME set.

ngbc sets are different for mame and demul, i'm not sure now which one is correct, but you must download ngbc set for demul

Thank You for Your fast answer ! EDIT : Game works in full speed (Win7 64bit - i7 930 - ATI 5870) For everyone out there who wants to know : Only AX3301P01.FMEM01 should be replaced in ngbc.zip from MAME RomSet (only CRC32 is different ?!)

Ah, gotcha. Nonetheless Demul should be a better overall emulator than Makaron at this point considering all the stated progress it's made especially over the last year. If only either were open-source..

Or better, switched from a plugin-based architecture to a more integrated system... but we can all be armchair quarterbacks.

Linux version sounds sweet. But I dont think thats going to happen. Its more likely to see Mame running Atomiswave games at good FPS than Demul Linux. Just saying...

I totally disagree. DX11 is much better than DX9, and it is make possible kind of software emulation on hardware. very many things like texture conversion or TA-emulation in DX11 can be done on GPU using shaders, in DX9 it is not possible and uses CPU instead.
2D-games like "Metal Slug 6" is good example - on first boss I have ~7fps in DX9 and solid 60fps in DX11

Yeah, that is bound to happen in five years (give or take one year) when fast enough hardware becomes ubiquitous. But since the world ends this year I want it now :-p

Demul is much less smooth, the frame rate fluctuates all over the place, you get brief, but annoying instances,every few seconds where the frame rate will drop quite significantly, then recover, it almost feels like a memory cache problem, where its trying to stream stuff off the disc (ISO)..
Makaron doesn't suffer from this at all, it will play the game at a rock solid frame rate without any stuttering.
I should add that i'm playing this with a Radeon 4850 which is a DX 10.1 capable card only, which according to the documentation, is apparently good enough for the DX 11 based renderer now being used by Demul, so maybe a 100% DX 11 class card does not suffer from the issue i described, but I'm not going to buy a new Gfx card to find out..

But normal users like me want to see that advantages on the screen. Actually I didnt buy BF 3 for this, I dont like to feel forced to migrate to some OS just for a application or a game. I will try this 0.57 version on Linux and Wine, Its funny to see that we can use directx11 on linux and not in windows XP.

there is no further possibility to have any advantages on DX9 interface, all you can reach already in DXv3/Legacy plugins... so as soon as dx11 is the only option to improve the things, you must move to new OSes, buy new hardware etc.

or use other emulator.
that's what I would do.
not everyone has the money to buy new hardware.

the only way to create chd is convert GDI raw images with CHDMAN tool from mame. but since new CHDMAN uses new compression methods, and more important GDI conversion isn't working at all, you must use older version, which is too can convert GDI just by accident as R.B. told before

I hear you. I just bought a new computer last month (Core I7 2600, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 570HD), but it took me four (4) years of money savings for it...
My last one was a single core Pentium 4, 2GB RAM. Demul was running on it like a slideshow.

To be honest I never tried running atomiswave games in Mame but if dolphin is any indication.... 30fps on i7-2600k overclocked?
pointless for user with "standard" PC.

Something is wrong with Your software. Dolphin Blue runs at constant speed - 60 fps ! My conf. : Win 7 64 bit i7 930 2.8 GHz ATI 5870

then indeed, CTOJAH is right... you are doing something wrong... even my i3-2310m/g540m is able to run it at the solid 60 fps (gpu plugin doesn't matter actually)..

He is referring to MAME.

My laptop is also a i3-2310m.
dolphin in mame 145u1 = 15% speed (approx 5fps) dolphin in demul 0.5.7 = 60fps

its a game not a person...listed under "hikari" hardware 's list

on previous demul version,there was a menu for hiakri hardware,but it couldn't be accessed...because it was incomplete now we have a couple of games from such system,but no menu to choose them...what the??

you stated "how exactly did people managed to run planet harrier?", right? it sounds like you know someone who managed to run it
since to our knowledge nobody could have run planet harrier, because there is no working hikaru emulator available atm, Arbee's question sounded a lot reasonable
hence, let me try again: Who is running Planet Harriers?
