It costs me $16 to drive my kid to school every day.

About $4 a gallon for gas now.
Drive a Jeep that gets 15 miles to the gallon (I live out in BFE and need four-wheel drive on any rainy/snowy day or I'm trapped in).
The school is 15 miles away.
He has to be to school earlier than the bus pick-up to train for the baseball team, and stays after school for the same reason, so thats two round trips a day... 60 miles... four gallons of gas... $16.00... every day.

Oh man thats insane! I never really thought about people that live in states where everything is so far away until I moved to Tennessee in 2005.
Being from Rhode Island where you can get from one end of the state to the other driving in under 45 minutes I was shocked when I wanted to go to Walmart in Crossville Tennesse, which took about 30 minutes each way,and never left the town of Crossville.
Gas in RI is $3.85 @ the big guys (Shell,Hess) but you can find it a little cheaper if you know where to look.

Hmmm, it must have cost me about $24 between gas and tolls to pick up Mrs. Gor from the airport on Saturday. I could have saved about $6 driving her car.

These antiquated measurements confuse me...
OK, petrol here is about $1.50 a litre, which works out to $5.60 a gallon. 60 miles = 100km which is quite a lot of driving just to take a kid to school. No idea what a BFE is...
Raising a child is an expensive business, as you have no doubt discovered.

Invest in a gravel or paved drive-way.
Pfft. Snow in TX. You're just making excuses.

It really sucks the schools don't have a good bus system like when I went to school.

I must be a hick. Then again I'm in red-county Armstrong in PA. "BFE" is a part of the vernacular here. However, through the years, my area has steadily become suburbanized.
And the gas prices are bad but it gets worse. It's bizarre that the school system here has the elementary school in one township, the middle-and junior-high schools in Freeport and the senior high school in Sarver! In Butler County! So sprawl happens.

Well, "GFE" is hooker-speak for "girlfriend experience" so "BFE" would logically be…

How long before the kid can bike (motor, of course) to school?

As has already been stated, when you start paying $1.50 per litre I might feel some sympathy.
The U.S. crying about petrol prices cracks me up everytime.

My truck gets about 12 MPG (10 before I replaced the hubs). I did the math, I'm spending $320 a month on gas. ~$10.50 a day. At first I was all "boo-hoo" about it. Then I walked into my local Honda dealer.
~43mpg ~$2.35/day
That's a savings of ~$244 a month. V V V V V This V V V V V costs $150/month.
Even the wife can't argue with that math:
"...Honey, how would you like an extra $94 a month?"
//maybe you can find a decent 4x4 ATV? That'll get 'er done in Texas.
