I've got a bunch of old IDE hard drives and now can't remember why I saved them in the first place. I just want to have a look and possbly recover some data from them. I've been looking at enclosures and don't really know what I want. Can anyone recomend one, or possibly a cable solution?

Depends where you are. I know a place in the UK called Maplins has some good ones 9one with USB 3.0 support too) but their not exactly cheap. Ebay is a good bet

Stiletto posted a list of what's in his PC emergency toolkit here a while back. A couple of IDE adapters were discussed in the thread.
Hang on.. here it is http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/sho...part=1&vc=1
I still like the red one from Drivewire but just for the looks see Stiletto's reply to my post. The one that has a "write block" button sounds handy, writing to a damaged drive could make it worse.

I had the very same issue and I got one of these:

Fantastic piece of kit for the price.

Yeah I've got one very similar to that, works fine. I have a couple of 2-drive SATA docks I use for large (1-2 TB) drives but for IDE drives I don't really mess with it, mine are all small capacity (I think they top out at 500GB? And the ones I have are like 60-80). So I just keep a cable handy in case I need to pull something off of them in an emergency.
