Something must be wrong here...
#275845 - 02/12/12 06:38 PM

I finally took the plunge and ordered an SSD.

I currently have 2 original WD Raptors (10k rpm) in a Raid 0. The original Raptors are 74GB each so my purchase of a 180GB (167 formatted) SSD is actually an increase in size for my system drive.

So in anticipation (and paranoia over constant writes to an SSD) of my new toy arriving in the coming week or so, I jumpped in to my system settings and removed the pagefile from my system drive to my 1.5TB drive, and also set all of my Temp locations (both user and system) to that drive as well.

Now while I'm in there, I notice that I haven't run the windows experience index thing since the last time I started from scratch. So I run it and I get a 5.9! Because of my primary HDD? Now how is that possible with 2 10k rpm drives in a raid 0?

My motherboard is an MSI x58 Platinum (or Platinum SLI but I don't remember which... and it's confusing because they both do SLI anyway)

Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!

I've got 5.9 for my PC too. I think that is as high as it will go with a standard HDD. Mine is a Samsung HD103SJ. I have three of them not in any kind of RAID. I paid less than 1/2 the price they are now!

I had 5.9 with my RST-cached HDD too. It was scored the same uncached.

Since you're both here, I wanted to reiterate thanks to both of you for your input on my SSD question from a few weeks ago. You guys both gave me some good info. I've got the new SSD running as my primary drive with a successful migrated OS image. WEI is now 7.9

What did you end up using to image the HDD and restore to the SSD? Did you turn off defragging , indexing, etc?

5.4 on my primary HD, what do I win? This is like golf scoring, isn't it?

No, it's like Galaxian, higher score wins. That is close to my high score in Galaxian too. LOL

Sum Ting Wong... new [Re: URherenow]
#275893 - 02/13/12 04:19 AM

Su Wong marries Lee Wong. The next year, the Wong's have a new baby. The nurse brings over a lovely, healthy, bouncy, but definitely Caucasian, white baby boy. "Congratulations," says the nurse to the new parents. "Well Mr.Wong, what will you and Mrs. Wong name the baby?" The puzzled father looks at his new baby boy and says, "well, two Wong's don't make a white, so I tink we name him Sum Ting Wong."

I ended up using this guide, using the in-built Win 7 imaging tools. It's a very well written guide, and I would recommend it to others making the swap to SSD.

Basically, it went like this:

1) Cleanup OS partition to help reduce size (in my case, I also needed to disable RST caching and switch from RAID 0 to AHCI disk drivers).

2) Shrink OS partition volume using Windows disk management.

3) Make a new disk image using Win backup/restore, saved to an extra internal HDD I use for backup (the use of a tertiary drive is important, as you can not re-image from a partition on the drive which has been cloned).

4) Make a bootable Windows repair disk in order to startup with OS restore options (made mine a bootable USB thumbdrive).

5) Install SSD in machine using the same SATA channel my previous HDD had been connected to.

6) Boot with repair disk, select system image, and voila.

Using the native Win7 tools worked nicely, as it correctly detected the SSD, installed TRIM, and configured the SSD properly (ie; defrag schedule already turned off automagically).

BTW, the 7.9 score I mentioned above is the new disk score, the combined system score is only 7.6. The lowest score is now cpu.

Ha, Microsoft probably gets kickbacks from the hardware manufacturers to slowly tweak the scores downward over time.

CPU 7.4
graphics 7.2
Ram 7.5 : but I've ordered 12GB of 1600 to replace what I thought was faster but it's currently running @1066.
