Good forum software supports both, and yalls argument about it is on par with OSG's previous bin threads. Less than worthless.

I like threaded mode, it helps to view and manage a discussion better. It let's you have a quick overview tree about what to read, who's replying who and what discussion "branches" you should either omit or pay attention to in large topics.

In the incredibly large discussion below, you can tell where some user goes off topic and can't differ by himself between good or bad so he needs a made up (mistranslated, adulterated and misinterpreted) text to tell him. It also tells you where another user goes mentally ill and starts replying the same things like a broken LP and figuratively covering his ears to believe everything he says is right.

Doing so in flat mode you can't, you would have to read everything. This is a discussion forum, not an IRC chat.

Problem with threaded mode at least in this forum, is there aren't guides for the branches. So when branches create yet more large branches, it's hard to follow up. Threaded mode also can't give you a chronological order of the replies, that's where flat mode is good for. Flat mode is also really practical when you want to read all the replies on a single page. So having both instead of only one is a good thing all internet should do.

You would think as subject line is not important on flat mode, it's also illogical to edit it in the first place with a ".". Hence subject DOES matter.

Another Poll should be made. I'm sure the results would be proportional to the number of people that (actually) use the 'Threaded' mode. Such as...

Do you open links in

a) New Tabs (flat users)

b) New Windows (threaded users)

When hammering nails I like to

a) Smash my fingers (threaded users)

b) Just get the job done (flat users)

When posting links I go out of my way to

a) make it a link that reroutes the page you're currently on - 'cause I'm a dick. (threaded users)

b) be considerate and just post the url as the link so it opens in a new window or tab (flat users) ...which really doesn't take that much effort. The forum software takes care of that.

I'm using Firefox, and threaded mode and whenever I click a link, it opens in a new tab...and it does this automatically.

Here's one example that comes to mind.

sorry Gor.

I know it can be middle clicked, but you wouldn't know that immediately.

eta:

Threaded User: I've been scrolling, clicking, reading a post, scrolling down and clicking the next one or another reply, I even replied the same thing someone else said because I didn't click their post to read it - so I end up wasting my time repeating what someone else already said.

Flat User: Hmmm... sounds like you missed flat mode... click that button in the top right with your mouse, and the posts all appear effortlessly on one page at once... forget to use it, and yeah, what you did.

It opens in a new tab for me on Chrome and IE. Are you using an outdated browser or something?

If Firefox is outdated then yeah.

Unless I have to change my FF settings to open ALL links in a new tab (doesn't make sense, unless a "target" in html is set). Most links posted in the forum will open in a new tab just from normal/left clicking.

Nah. He just likes to blame others for his inability to properly config a web browser. Using Firefox 6, opens on new tab. I don't remember if I had to enable that option before.

Flat User: "This topic has taken the off topic route so much that I don't follow what were we talking about in the first place. In threaded mode I could had ignored the useless talk"

I agree with krick though, there are other things we should be talking about instead of a browsing forum personal preference.

Create an example of how I can code links for dicks like you, put it in a textfile, and attach it to a reply.

I tried it in firefox 3.whatever I had, and it did what you described. I then upgraded to firefox 10 and after
it froze for a few minutes, I was able to test in that too, and that did what you described as well. Another
reason I'm glad I started using Chrome. As I said, create an example of how to code links for dicks like you
and I'll start using it.

u mad?

Forget a text file. I can only think you didn't use a "target" in the html tags, such as "target=blank" or whatever. Assuming you did use html tags when typing out the link. I'm not going to bother to sift through the 'source' as it's not that big of a deal. edit: No "target" was set, therefor it would redirect the current page you're on.

The easier way is to highlight some text, then click on the 3rd button on the 2nd row (for 'Insert Hypertext'), the rest should be obvious. I've done it this way and links have opened in a new tab by left clicking.

Sorry for saying anyone that does that is a "dick". It was supposed to be a joke. I'm not a dick, I'm a tom. But the question remains, who's a harry?

Exactly, 55.4% is a majority. You're a good learner.

I'd say the % that use IE and Firefox don't know any better, so it's probably safe to just add those users to
the Chrome users. Then, we can say that Chrome users account for 92.5% of internet users, which is really
impressive when you think about it.

Anyway - threaded mode for President! OSG for village idiot!

Anyone can play with numbers!

IE users: 20.1%
Chrome users: 35.3%
Firefox users: 37.1%
Total using either Firefox or Chrome: 72.4%

Safari users: 4.3%
Opera users: 2.4%
Total using anything other than Internet Explorer: 79.1%
Nearly four times the amount using Internet Explorer!

Yes. IE + Crome is the SMALLEST "majority" that can be created with those numbers.

A more honest eye would see that a plurality use Firefox.

And that number will keep growing, too (poor IE ). I wonder
when Chrome will surpass Firefox as the browser with the most
users, maybe March or April? Then, how long before Chrome is
used by the majority?

Let's just call Chrome and IE a coalition government with regards to links to outside sites and be done with it.

Why, need directions?

If the people that ONLY use IE are _not_ using (either) FF or Chrome they are not _also_ using FF or Chrome (thus the emphasis on the 'AND' vs 'OR'). So then how can the 2 be added together?

I suppose I'm going on the presumption that people typically stick with 1 browser a majority of the time. Not like before they get on the internet they flip a coin or roll the dice on 'Hmmm, which browser shall I use today?"

Threaded Mode, I just don't get.

If little Tommy has 1 dollar in his pocket made up of 1 quarter, 4 dimes, 5 pennies, and 6 nickels, how many of his
coins are either quarters or nickels?

The point was that more than half of internet users wouldn't have the same complaint as you. Perhaps you should
call Mozilla Foundation the dicks for not supporting a feature that other browsers do. Regardless, in the future, I'll
use target=_blank so you don't have to bitch. You're welcome.

You're alienating a majority of the planet with that example...

I see your point.

If you don't mind typing {a href="copy/paste-a-website.whatever" target="blank"} all that out {/a} then more power to ya... when you could just do as I suggested in another post and not have to worry about adding a target="blank" (I'm sure you could simply scroll up to take a quick look, then resume reading the rest of this post if you're in flat mode) and save yourself the time, and the poor FF users the trouble if they should not have the foresight that maybe, just maybe, it's a link that redirects and not use their middle mouse button (assuming they have a middle mouse button) to open a link.

But I guess that makes sense. Typing out the html code is more hassle, just like using threaded. IE sucks - regardless if it's able to open ALL links (even when targeted to nothing or even to self -right? ) in another tab or window.

So I'll be sticking with FF in the meantime. Just so you can keep typing out those extra few words of html.

eta: I tried the 'Soul Train' link in Chrome. It redirected when left clicked. So to say that it's the fault of whichever browser is incorrect. I will not bother to check in IE. If it's a non-default configuration then that shouldn't count. If it can be configured in Chrome or IE it can surely be configured in FF.

Ah. There's a harry now. And it's a big deal. A big harry deal.

edit: I think I know why it didn't open in Chrome. I remember now that I set it's compaibility mode to another browser so as to avoid having to deal with the timeline on fb profile pages.

Doing so makes it much easier to find game related posts and to help with or claim gifts.
