Best/easiest program...

for ripping items from gfx roms? Or for just poking through them?

Does it run in MESS? 
Not sure if today's computers can still run full screen 320x200 MS-DOS programs out of the box (DOSbox or a virtual machine aside)
On Windows, faTILEty can view a decent amount of games (not sure about saving/ripping/hacking though), and won't steal mode 13h on you

Been so long since I set that up... but now that you mention that, on my windows XP I did need to batch a run of DosBox 0.72 first.
