How do Mame looks for roms

I think, think 1 in mother set 2 in clone set
Not discussion of single, merged, full set or what the name is. Not discussion about small hdd.
But there are plenty, plenty of duplicates, how to delete the duplicates, keeping one, and still all is ok. Should it be left alone in root. Is it a setting. Is there a third alternative where Mame looks.
If game aaa and game bbb share the same rom, not related in anything, how do I make Mame find the rom.

My roms are fully merged. So MAME always looks at the parent set. If you had the more common partial-merge, the parent is a complete set, and the clones only have the roms that are different from the parent. MAME looks in parent and clone.
If you have more than one path in the roms-path, then MAME will look in the parent and clone in each of the listed folders.
Normally each rom has the same filename and CRC as listed in the source, but if only one matched (filename or CRC), then it will attempt to use that too. You'll get a warning if the size or SHA1 doesn't match the expected values.
CHDs are more strict, it has to match in every way, or it will get rejected. Unfortunately.
