MAMEWorld Updates, Sponsorship / Donations required
#273563 - 01/20/12 12:58 PM

As you probably noticed, we had a load of downtime a few weeks ago, and nearly lost our hosting.

Due to this we need to make a few changes and updates to MAMEWorld to ensure similar issues do not happen again.

The forum software needs purchase of the latest version, and we need to keep some funds for hosting (it costs a lot as our bandwidth is vast) and we have few paying sponsors left.

So if you wish to help towards the upkeep and future existence of the No.1 MAME Site, please feel free to Paypal a few dollars/pounds/euro/yen or whatever to me at [email protected] and I'll try to post up thanks to all of you.

Thanks.

I'm not sure it will help with MAWS, but it will keep MW online for the foreseeable future.

That's if more than two people donate anyhow..

  1. Can we get some information on how much is needed and how much has been donated so far?
  2. Since it seems hosting is a common issue, would it be useful to setup a yearly donation drive (maybe a blackout or something until the amount is met)?
  3. [email protected] ... really? No offense, but could we get a more official looking paypal account? I feel a little odd sending funds to fordprobestore for mameworld.

Has there been any thought about running banner ads through Google AdSense or anything like that? I know they're kind of annoying, but they seem to be everywhere these days.

A couple hundred dollars would be handy right now, so far we raised about $70 from user donations.

It's not common, this will be the first time, in a very long time.

That's my work email address, I can set up a mameworld one if people really want it, but being as I was a founder member of MW and have been involved since 1999, most regular people know I exist. You have few posts and have only been here a year or so, so maybe you don't.

I gave up Foster's for a day.

If anyone wants me, I'll be in the corner hurting myself

Cheers,

Coherance of posts inversely proportional to Foster's consumption!!!

MAMEWorld is an institution.

It hosts the main English-speaking forum for MAME users, and many of the devs come here, too.

It hosts the sites for MAME Artwork and MAME Samples.

It hosts the sites for at least nine MAMEDevs.

It hosts the sites for many great frontends (EmuLoader, MAMEWah, MAMEClassic, etc.)

It hosted MAWS, which is sadly on hiatus at the moment.

Roc's hosted me for free for years now, and I've probably sucked up a good amount of his bandwidth, so I put in a bigger chunk.

Some of you long-time regulars that are here, try and send $5 or more. It's the least we can do to keep this place online. NOTE: Send as a gift, to save Roc the fees.

Payday for most people is in two days. If you can afford to pay your ISP bill each month, then you can afford to help out here.

(Sorry, Roc, for getting preachy, but I would be a sad little boy if I woke up tomorrow and MW was gone, just remember to renew ontime each year, mmkay )

I can spare a $20 right now when I get home from work.
Isn't it best to send through paypal as a gift, so it doesn't get taxed?

...thanks to those who have donated so far.

We can afford the forum upgrade package and have hosting sorted for a few months (it's €100 a month almost).

Keep it coming though please, to get us on a solid footing for the next year or so.

$5, sorry it wasn't more.

Maybe you guys ought to run a donation setup every "x" months?

what about looking for a cheaper service? Something thet might cost you the same amount for a whole year? That would mean migrating everything and it means a BIG pain in the ass, but it would mean solving a long term issue once and for all....

There's an easy way to help with bandwidth usage... Put a severe limit on attachment size.

Force people to host large files somewhere else and link to them.

No thanks. Over half the bandwidth goes to mirroring mame. That would go before screwing up the forums. It's the size that is the bigger issue than bandwidth, both in costs and the hassle associated with moving it all.

25 Pounds donated but its arrival will be a bit delayed as I do not use Paypal. Instead a well-known name here is acting as an intermediary. I have transferred the funds to his account using on-line banking and they will be forwarded by Paypal as soon as he recieves them.
