is an icore3 cpu good for mame?
#273352 - 01/18/12 02:43 AM

currently i have a dual core duo at 3ghz and 4 gb ram on win 7 64 x,and most if not all mame games run pretty well, but i was wondering if i decide to buy an ico3 cpu, will i get an improvement on "heavy" 3d games like san francisco rush, californai speed etc,or the speed will be the same as my dual core?and yeah, keep in mind that i change cpu according to my MAME need, rather than for modern pc games...i still play them(Rage, saints row the third to name some new ones)but they ran perfectly already my current cpu.

so...shall i upgrade my computer?

Exactly what CPU and MOBO do you have now?

I'm assuming if you upgrade the CPU you will have to change out the board. If money isn't a problem, then by all means do it, but you won't see a dramatic improvement with most games if any performance increase at all.

as ik wrote i have a dual core duo intel at 3ghz,the motherboardi n asus pk5e.."something",can0t remember the exact model,i bought it in 2009.well i always take california speed as my comparison method ...i also have a geforce gts 450 as video card, but since i remember that mame is CPU anmd not gpu dependant.,i was just asking if i will have some improvement..also because i perfectly rem,em,ber a gut who posted a video on youtube(which i can0t find right now)who shwoed said game running very fast and fluid using the same cpu as mine, only overclocked

I try not to keep up with modern hardware until I can afford it so I might be wrong, but I believe a low-end Core i3 will not be much faster for MAME than a 3GHz Core 2 Duo.

To use a Core i CPU, you'll need a new motherboard and new DDR3 RAM as well. If I were you I would wait until I could afford a faster CPU.

I was using a core i3 2100 @ 3.1 for about 2.5 months and MAME games ran well with it,as did PC games, even some of the more demanding ones.Ive upgraded to a i5 2500k @ 3.3 since then and TBH,I havent noticed much of a difference MAME-wise.

But as others have said you have to upgrade your Mobo so if you can,I would just wait until I could grab a new Mobo,ddr3
ram and a core i5-i7

The point of the -K series CPUs is that you are encouraged to overclock them. Stock, they're nothing special and AFAIK you can get a non-K equivalent a bit cheaper.

Regarding the original question, I don't think an i3 would give you much advantage over a 3 GHz Core 2 Duo. You'd want to go to an overclocked -K series i5 or i7 to see significant boosts in 3D MAME games from where you're at.

To sum things up if your upgrade will get you 4.5 - 5GHz without breaking you financially then do it and you will enjoy the results. Anything less I wouldn't worry about it at this time.

ok guys thanks for the infoi'll just wait then..according to many charts ive seen online, there's not much difference between the two cpu, while the i7 its just a league on its own in terms of speed.

Core I3 is a dual core CPU so no, you won't get any improvements.

but with a Core I5 2500K, yes, you will. My dad just got a laptop with Core I7 CPU and boy, MAME games run so much faster compared to an old Core2Duo 1.8GHz.
of course, you need a Win7 64-bits and the 64-bits compiled MAME.
