NES controller hack
#273091 - 01/15/12 08:51 AM

So my sister got me a NES controller that has been hacked into an iPhone dock for Christmas. I feel bad, she knows I'm a classic gaming geek and was trying to get me a unique gift, but unfortunately it's a real butcher job. Basically, they dremeled a slot in the face of the controller and sloppily hot glued in a standard, white sync cable. To make it fit, they notched out the upper middle part of the PCB, cracking it in half in the process.

I would just use it as-is, except the connection is flaky. Half the time, my iPhone pops up a "this device does not support charging" message when it's connected. Even when I can get it to work, it flakes out again if you look at it funny. I assume the wire and/or connector got damaged because of the severe angle it's squashed into to fit inside the controller.

Has anyone seen a sync cable with a right-angle connection on the iPhone/iPod end? I've been poking around but nothing's come up so far. With a proper cable/connector, I'm thinking I can at least make the thing work as intended.

Failing that, are there any NES controller USB conversion kits that include the PCB? If I could find something like that, I'd just ditch the dock idea and make it into a PC gamepad, which is arguably a cooler thing anyway.

There's this from Think Geek: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/games/ba5a/

That's pretty cool, but not quite what I'm looking for. I was hoping to find a DIY kit of some sort to convert an existing controller, since that is what I have. Buying yet another entire controller would kind of defeat the purpose.
