Emulated MAME arcades
#272982 - 01/14/12 06:39 PM

I think I read somewhere that MAME now emulates itself because some bootleggers made "33 in 1" arcade boards that run things like Ghosts and Goblins under an old version of MAME. Is this right or am I getting confused?

Correct. 39in1 has been in MAME for over a year, and Tim S. has the newer "Happy Fish 302-in-1" up and running but hasn't submitted it yet.

MESS also can run Android 1.6 (emulating a mobile phone development platform) so we should be able to run MAME4All inside MAME/MESS ;-) And with the recent impressive i386/486/Pentium progress in MESS, it shouldn't be long before we can run MAME 0.01.

Thanks, I was in an arcade earlier today and saw a bunch of machines that looked like bootleg compilations, but they might not have had anything to do with MAME.

Yo dawg, we heard you like MAME, so we got MAME running in your Mess, running on your Windows XP, running on your VMWare, running on your Linux, running on your Bochs, running on your Windows 7!

The odds of "bootleg compilations" not having anything to do with MAME are pretty small, to be honest. Ultracade (aka Global Arcade Classics) supposedly has nothing to do with MAME, but that's never been proven either way.

This sort of reminds me of SURFACE DETAIL new [Re: R. Belmont]

where a character is involved in simulated battles, within a simulated war, where one can never quite be sure when it's real.

Couldn't someone, with the proper knowledge/skills required, that owns an ultracade open it up and find out if it uses MAME?

He means not using any pieces of mame source, like using cpu cores and drivers and changing the other stuff to disguise it. We know they aren't using mame.exe if that is what you are saying...

IIRC the drives were encrypted in some way too. Didn't they filter through some sort of add on board? I could be thinking of another system...

you asked for that and here you are (still needs some debugger tweak to run, but it's basically done )

Yeah, the debugger tweak kind of disqualifies it

Carl fixed it, so we are now really emulating MAME 0.1 in MESS...

I'm always fascinated reading about various projects, like gcc self-compiling, svn/git self-hosting, etc.

Curious at what point MAME/MESS will be able to self-emulate, e.g. MAME/MESS emulating a PC running the same version of MAME/MESS. And then how many levels can you nest before the universe implodes.

well, I guess that already the first nested instance would crawl to 1 second per frame, so I doubt one would like to go further

Popped into the arcade again today and took a couple of (bad) photos of the menu screens:
