audit system in MAME
#272485 - 01/08/12 10:51 PM

I'm wondering... how can MAME audit games so fast ?
I mean, it's almost instantaneous. just run mame.exe without parameters and a bunch of games show on screen, with the proper status.

my frontend takes quite a while to open .zip files and validate CRC32 checksums for each game.

I'm just curious.

I don't think it validates any ROMs, just sees the zip files and displayed the corresponding name in the MAME GUI.

I think you're right. I have a few merged clone sets that dot not appear in the list.
but some games that have missing ROMs do appear in it.

Tested. A blank, 0 byte zip file passes as valid for the MAME list.

If I remember correctly, that's how people rigged their sets to seem complete (esp. samples). It didn't matter because even if you had a fake file that was there, it didn't make anything work. It only looked like you had a full set. For what that's worth.

Later...

Regarding samples, that suggests to me why it's been possible to use 'custom' sets - for example the alternate Star Trek one, which is pretty rad.

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.

it only displays the game name, but when you try to click on it, MAME correctly tells you that you're missing files

audit and validation only happens when you actually try to launch the game

that's why we always said that the internal UI is not intended to replace a frontend. it's only there to help you if you don't remember shortnames.

you are mixing up the subject.
Ciro was referring to the internal menu, which does not perform any audit when displaying some titles you can launch
you are referring to the fact that MAME does not perform *ANY* checksum audit for sample (it only checks if you have a .wav file with the proper name).

in principle you can use .wav with the moans from a porn movie as sample, as far as MAME is concerned, as long as you use the correct file names...

As the others said, it just looks for the existence of each zip file. My roms are fully-merged, so the internal UI doesn't show any clones.
