A question for the Brits
#271858 - 12/31/11 07:45 AM

Why do I always hear jokes about Brits "queuing" or people claiming that they like queuing.

Doesn't "queuing" mean to stand in line? Why is it supposed to be a British thing to stand in line?

At least they're not "standing ON line" like those dipshits in New York.

Every time I see that word I see it as (sounding like) Que-Yoo-ing. I mean, why have the 'ue' twice (in "queue")? It just doesn't make any sense.

Agreed. Queuing actually makes some sense, but whenever I hear a New Yorker say they're "standing on line" it makes me cringe.

Because they're a bunch of "u"-obsessed Francophiles.

You can try pronouncing it "kwayway" or "Q-Wing" if you like.

Also, "que" would leave them all whating.

I'm not a Brit, but my understanding is that it's a cultural stereotype that any random group of English people will efficiently form themselves into a line when necessary without any prompting or direction, where most other peoples (read: Americans) will tend to just be a disorganized mob.

Woe betide any Brit who disregards the queing rule. They will be shunned and outcast from polite society forever ! But roughly barging inbetween two people will be permitted at the bar .
