If it's running on Windows 98, what do you think? Are you asking for the exact processor and graphics card or what?

I know a PC based machine, but I mean, who by and what specs?

Also, does it get anywhere past the DOS prompt after the Win 98 screen?

well, if the arcade cabinet was just a PC running Windows with a protection dongle how should it be emulated other than emulating the hardware and letting it run its OS?

however, don't expect to run DOS/Windows games which were not in arcades: you have to use MESS for that

Yes, I'm wondering how long before I can hack in my own PC harddrive image of lets say DOOM II and play that on mame. I'll probably get 15% speed!

I'm a little surprised that this is a novel concept to anyone. I mean, MAME reproduces the hardware games originally ran on, period.

Yes, but that's just like using VirtualBox or getting my I486DX2 board out, not hacky enough and is supposed to work. Doing it this way is more fun in that aspect.

More fun that is, if the BIOS would even recognize the harddisk lol.

what the hell are you talking about?!? MESS is sharing 100% PC emulation with MAME, so where would you see any difference?!?

you should do a quick google search before spreading misinformation...

I know that. I know MESS does PC emulation. You missed the point. MESS is supposed to let you use any harddisk. MESS is supposed to let you install your own OS and stuff. MAME isn't, and that's why I said hacky because I'd be changing the harddisk contents to run my own game.

You've completely missed his point the particular arcade board that he plans to try hacking his Doom disk image into may refuse to use said disk image, because it most likely has a custom BIOS designed to stop people (bootleggers) hacking in any old hard disk.

Actually it's a standard Phoenix BIOS. I have a similar type (if not the same) on either my 486 or AMD K6-2 board. It searches for any IDE drives and auto-sets them up. Only problem is that it's currently not registering even the official disk. Whether that's a glitch I'm having or standard for the moment, I dunno. Then again I have little hope for the disk since converting it and trying to get it to boot on anything else (Virtual PC, VirtualBox, Pentium 4 HT) will either leave you stuck in the command prompt and crash when you try to run the game or the disk won't boot at all.

Actually, most PC-based games use a stock BIOS (and usually a stock motherboard). The extent of customization is generally to blank out the POST screens and/or make sure it boots without a VGA card (in the case of Psychic Force 2012, which has a Voodoo but no VGA).
