MESS PSX software list question

Sorry guys for posting this here, but i don't see a forum on mess.org and don't know where the MESS guys normally chat.
Anyway, i see the psx.xml file has bin/cue files in it, and even 1 ccd file in it.
I'm curious why this is the route chosen? Personally i've converted bin/cue or iso to chd and have had zero issues running chd's in MESS, and given the MAME structure, it seems like the logical step.
Is there a technical reason behind this?

Best discussed at the actual MESS forum: http://forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=1
