Perian plus Flip4Mac will let you play most videos in QuickTime player.
There's always VLC if you swing that way, but it won't get you coverage of newer Windows Media formats the way Flip4Mac does.
If you need RealMedia and other weird-arse formats, your best bet is to get MPlayer OSX Extended along with the binary codec pack further down that page.
