AMD FX-8150 @ 4.8Ghz MAME 0.143u9 Benchmarks
#268123 - 11/07/11 02:17 AM

I was messing around overclocking an FX-8150 and figured I may as well run some MAME benchmarks while I was at it, no surprises here the Intel i7 are still king off the hill in MAME.

System spec: AMD FX-8150 @ 4.8Ghz ,Corsair H80 water cooler, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 motherboard, 8GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR3-1866 RAM, AMD HD6870 graphics card, Windows 7 64bit SP1,MAMEUI64 [rom name] -bench 90 .

For comparison I've included RB's 4.8Ghz i7 2600K benchmarks of MAME 0.141.

ROM FX-8150 I7-2600K
*
BLITZ 143.30% 258.00%
DOLPHIN 27.62% 38.00%
GAUNTLEG 199.48% 370.00%
GRADIUS4 147.71% 236.00%
PROPCYCL 119.31% 259.00%
RADIKALB 125.12% 210.00%
SCUD 79.36% 149.00%
STARSLDR 67.92% 85.00%

The mighty Bulldozer...

The damn things actually slower than a Phenom II in alot of benchmarks.

Lol...more like Derpdozer.

Not surprising. AMD's now admitted there's a hardware bug in the cache that hurts performance - they tried to get a patch into Linux to work around it, but Linus wasn't real happy with how they were doing things

Yep, just 'mame.exe game -bench 90'

You can use any number of seconds, I've historically used 90 so there's lots of datapoints on that.

well mame is more optimized for intel chips so what u expect plus benchmarks are benchmarks- real word performance is what counts

Holy thread resurrection Batman!!!.

Mame is not optimised for Intel chips at all, the simple fact is Intel chips have vastly superior IPC performance, which is just coincidently what MAME thrives on.

For games and apps that make use of 4,6,8 cores then yes, Bulldozer is a perfectly acceptable, if power thirsty hot running CPU.

But for emulators that need good single core IPC, which is just about everyone of them...then Bulldozers suck.

So things haven't changed in the 11 months since this thread was made?

Not much has changed with AMD in those 11 months. People are saying on other forums that Zambezi, Trinity, and Liano can't touch i7 when it comes to CPU intensive tasks.

Until benchmarks are done with those CPUs, it's all speculation, but at this point I believe it.

well i saw that on a site the intel ting- will clock speed help mame- fx can clock very good speeds when overclocked- will this help mame games run faster. forget benchmarks i want to now how the games actually ran on the chip. cus i want to build a pc for mame and tings are very expensive were i live and i cant afford intel.

Clock speed is irrelevant...an Intel sandybridge/Ivybridge CPU is 40-50% faster than a Bulldozer FX CPU at the same clockspeed.

Just think about that for a second...an Intel CPU at 4Ghz is as fast as an AMD FX CPU would be at nearly 6Ghz in MAME.

I've done my own testing in MAME with an AMD Phenom II CPU that can run with 2,3 or 4 (@3.8Ghz) cores and I can tell you for a fact that the optimum efficiency is 3 cores...any more than that and the gains are marginal, about 5% at most.

A dual core budget Intel CPU with Hyperthreading running at 3Ghz or so will be most likely faster for MAME than a 4Ghz overclocked AMD FX CPU with 4 or more cores.

There is no getting around the fact that for MAME, Intel CPU's wipe the floor with AMD, having said all that, the VAST majority of games in MAME will run at full speed on a 4Ghz or faster AMD CPU, and those that don't, are for the most part, pretty unplayable anyway, because of immature driver support in MAME.

whats the highest clocked i3 that i can get out of the box that is - would that be a good chip

Intel Core i3-2130 3.40GHz

2 Cores, 4 threads.

$130

Budget Intel i3 that will be faster than any AMD chip at stock, non overclocked speed.

You'd need to take a Bulldozer CPU to near 4.8Ghz to beat the i3 in MAME.

how about a budget motherboard and what ram u recommend and dose that i3 come whit a gpu inside and if yes will it be good enough.
