Can disable 'windows' keys in MAME?
#268007 - 11/04/11 09:53 PM

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to disable the 'Windows' keys on the keyboard while using MAME? Is there a way MAME can disable the 'windows' keys?

Thanks.

If you use a keyboard to play games. Bashing the left control and / or left alt keys can lead to accidentally hitting the Windows key. This fucks up the game for some people because the Start Menu 'steals' focus from the game. Well, it doesn't really 'steal' it because the Windows key was hit, requesting the Start Menu.

That easily gets fixed by popping out the key with a screwdriver or another (lock) key. No need to tweak registry files or anything and takes less than 5 seconds to pop out or put back again.

Some of us actually use that key outside of gaming.

If you disable the key you can't use it out of gaming anyway. Either taking the key out or disabling gives the same result: You can't use it again till you put back/enable the key again.

Also you have two Windows keys, disabling it via registry disables both. Taking the key which gets on the way (which usually is only the one between left Crtl and Alt keys) let the other key still for use.

...

I wonder if disabling via registry also disables Windows key shortcuts.

My guess is yes.

I have a Logitech G110 keyboard that has a slide switch to enable/disable the Windows key.

I had the problem of accidently hitting the Windows key (fat fingers), so I did the registry hack about 2 years ago and have never regretted it. Best thing ever!

If I want to activate the Start menu, I'll click on the start button - that's what it is there for.

And if you really want to turn it on/off, make up a couple of .reg files on your desktop.

It isn't free, apart from a 7-day trialware.

I pop that key off every keyboard I have (also the menu one. I NEVER have a reason to hit them... and it pisses me off every time I do)

Really? Win key is actually quite comfy if you know how to use it.

If I want to access "Mi PC" without looking for the icon I press Win key + E.
If I want to zoom in the whole desktop to an specific area I press Win key + "+ key". Quite handy when emulators/flash games don't support Window resize/full screen and stick to native resolutions. You press Win key + Esc to cancel zoom in.
If I want to browse through windows in Aero I press Win key + Tab key. I don't use Alt + Tab anymore.
If I want to run a program through dialog box I press Win key + R.
If I have a lot of windows open and I want to clear the desktop (minimize all) I press Win key + D.
And the list goes on.

Everyone has a mouse, but I'm still quite old school. The less I depend on the mouse the better (BTW, impossible to do when browsing internet). Do you have an idea how many shortcuts you had to actually learn in WordStar? :P Maybe I should check if MESS can run it.

It's called key (RE-)mapping...... new [Re: BIOS-D]
#268247 - 11/09/11 05:31 AM

Or the game gets the fuckin ax! In this day, especially, anyone who makes a game that doesn't feature key re-mapping, should be punched in the back of the neck.

Of course, playing anything I care to play with a keyboard blows donkey dicks anyways.

(You might think I'm hateful today. And you might be right. However, my sentiment above would be the same on any day.)

It used to be free, back in the day... I guess I've been gone a while.
