But I HATE the thought of being so locked down with it as I hate apple products.
So the question is, what is the better iPad alternative?

Be carefull with Android tablets. The ones I've seen either dont work with apps right or have other annoying features.
TBH, having used and iPad 2, I'd recomend that..

One thing that really concerns me is trying to move files on and off of the thing. I think that it would be a good move actually. But just a little spooked at how to do things.

I was looking to try a $99 HP TouchPad if and when they do that last production run.

Frankly, my last experience with an HP laptop was so excruciating, they'd have to pay *me* $99 to take one.

My iPad 2 was my first iOS device, and it initially spooked me:
1) not to be able to use it as a simple external storage device as I did my iPod Classic 160, moving files to/from at will, using folders as flexibly as in Windows;
2) being able to move stuff only within certain strict parameters, i.e. only within iTunes or DropBox and then only in fixed locations;
3) not being able to save my ecchi pics under new filenames. (or maybe that's just Safari behavior, and not common to all iPad browsers?)

Which is why so many iOS device owners use the jailbreak option. Though I haven't pursued this yet with either of my iOS devices; I'm trying to get a feel for vulnerability to malware.
I would have gotten a 10" Android tablet if only the correct sheet-music app existed. But AFAIK, only one proprietary app exists that works exclusively with one online music vendor's material. (THIS is the dumbest shit ever.)
