Here is a quick start guide I wrote that might help people that are new to using HLSL and also may help explain a few things for others?
Although unofficial and not 'gospel' the settings and descriptions seem to work for me and I have tried to explain in simple terms.
If you need more scientific then this is not for you.
I wrote it a while ago and was posted on an account required forum. I have ported it to my blog so all can read.
Enjoy! http://gamingnos.blogspot.com/2011/10/quick-start-mame-hlsl-filter-guide-up.html

Thanks jclampy, for putting all the information on your blog.
I will test out your settings and try and find a fine medium against what I'm currently using.

Thanks for the feedback.
May I ask what resolution numbers you are using: in hlsl.ini hlsl_snap_width *** hlsl_snap_height *** shadow_mask_x_count *** shadow_mask_y_count ***
and in bezel artwork (mslug.lay); view name="Upright_Artwork" screen index="0" bounds x="***" y="***" width="***" height="***" / /screen bezel element="bezel" bounds x="***" y="***" width="***" height="***" /
and in mame.ini; aspect0 = *** resolution0 = ***
I could just make sure it is set optimal for you.
(At moment I set "shadow_mask x & y counts" to same as original games resolution to reduce the moiré effect. HLSL may change in future to remove moiré issues and then how I use "shadow_mask x & y counts" could change as well. Just keep that in mind for further HLSL revisions).

I'm using these settings in latest official MAME64 on a 21 or 22" (can't remember) sammi 1080P LED display 1920 X 1080
I just now as I post this am getting off work, so I have not had the chance yet to absorb all the information or try settings from your blog yet.
If you happen to have any recommendations I will happily try them

Yeah, give my settings a go with Metal Slug 1 and see what you think.
You will have to change the resolution numbers to match your widescreen display though as my monitor is not. That's why I was asking for the "***" details in last post. If you can give me those I can help you out there.
PS1: what version of Mame are you running, are your red/blue/green settings really split up and not like this; power 1.100000,1.100000,1.100000 In fact your hlsl.ini looks like an old version if I'm not mistaken.
PS2: are you sure you want to use defocus? That just adds 'blurriness'.
PS3: the screenshot you posted has been distorted out of shape. You might need to post it somewhere where the original image size will be preserved. Maybe try the imageserver I used from my previous posts although I don't know what image sizes they support.
