Awesome Unix "diff" command
#263680 - 09/02/11 03:48 AM

Never knew this command existed... but it rules.

I'm TRYING to clean up all our video files from two computers, and the camcorder... and its a mess... literally thousands of files, duplicates everywhere, incomplete sets everywhere. I fingered there must be an easy way to sort this out, so I googled "compare directories" and bam... punched me in the nose.

Unix command:

diff -rq dir1 dir2

where r is recursive, q is quick (meaning don't compare file contents just file names).

Easy cheesy. Quickly created a master set of files, deleted all the redundant garbage, saved hundreds of gigabytes of wasted memory, and can confidently erase my camcorder's memory in prep for tomorrows vidography of Bounty Hunter.

Yeah, there are some REALLY cool ways to do things in Unix/Linux that can't really be done that well in Winders.

I would switch completely if I didn't do gaming in Windows.

All the different flavors of *nix that are all...kind of...compatible is a bit off-putting too.

Although distrowatch shows that ubuntu is the most downloaded from there.

If you want a nice gui diff tool on Windows try Araxis Merge.

"Beyond Compare" is the best diff tool I have ever used. I've been using it for about 10 years now, and I use it nearly every day. It's worth every penny...

On this topic... new [Re: GatKong]

I am in the habit of collecting and/or modifying wallpapers for my own desktop background use. 1920x1080. It's really silly when you get right down to it, since I rarely even see my desktop (I keep my puter on 24/7/365 if I can help it, and my program or directory windows stay open).

Anyway, the way I have been backing them up is:
1) have SuperCopier 2 running in the background (autostarts with Windows), where the default behaviour is to Rename New File. Sure as hell beats standard Windows copy behavior, e.g. stops everything in case of error.
2) Copy files.
3) Run DoubleKiller on the target directory.

So the end result is:
- completely new files get copied over
- identically named (but updated or otherwise changed) files get copied over with new filenames
- truly identical doubles (with new filenames) get removed.

Contrived perhaps, but the goal is accomplished.

What do you call this kind of backup, and what sort of freeware or payware is recommended to do this automatically/efficiently?

rsync. another unix beauty. you should be able to find windows binaries around (I have one running but don't remember where i got it), and with careful doc reading you should be able to reproduce that behaviour.

In other words, you're saying that if I mess up a CLI command by just one keypress, I'll reproduce the behaviour of an enraged ape?

Same as if you tick the wrong checkbox in a GUI app

A freeware app I have used is called SyncBack. It acts similar to rsync.
