yep. On the ebay listing I explain a method that works with USB, by using a PS/2 to USB adapter. But I'm not sure if this method really works 100% for all games under MAME. Anybody knows more about it?
Anopther option might be a PCI PS/2 card if you have an actual desktop:
http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Port-USB2-PS2PORT-32BIT/dp/B0014WN8KW

I think the simplicity of the HotRod is the challenge, since it works low key on the bios level, emulating nothing but key strokes on the keyboard.

I've bought a number of PS/2-USB adaptors over the years and found to my dismay that not all of them work as desired. It may be due to keyboard circuitry or something within the adaptor, but I don't think that would selectively affect certain games (rather than all of them at once).

I have what essentially is a beta interface for my X-Arcade 2P panel. It's a small, exposed circuit board with a somewhat messy bunch of wires, but at least it works 100%.

I have had _zero_ success with any PS/2-to-USB adapter I've tried, and I've tried quite a few. The best I've found is a TrendNet, but it still "forgets" key releases occasionally when rotating through a diagonal.

I ended up ripping out the PS/2 encoder and putting one of these in. An hour or two of wiring later (I'm slow) and it's been flawless ever since.

You may want to give Andy/Ultimarc and the IPAC2/IPACVE a plug on your eBay listing for those that actually want results and don't mind getting their hands a bit dirty.

NOTE: I have no affiliation with TrendNet or Ultimarc, I'm just a happy customer

Adapters do not work 100% especially under Vista and Win 7. This did it for me:

If and when my MAME machine gets upgraded to something that doesn't have PS/2 ports, I'll be going this route. In the meantime, my HotRod is something like 10 years old and still works great.

Mine is 01895 and I got it like 2-3+ years after HH started selling them. Not that it really matters except for curiousities sake.

Later...

I have a Hotrod SE. For now a Kingwin PS/2 to USB adapter serves my purpose as I don't fire mame up very much to be bothered by the occasional miss. Eventually I would like to replace the encoder with something like this or the IPAC. What I would really want though is something that can handle the two sticks + buttons AND a trackball and/or spinner. I do not currently have either, but eventually. I probably can't fit both in the Hotrod casing though.

00871 here.

Clearly, units below serial number 1000 are more desirable. The later ones just don't have that vintage feel.

I'd say a trackball is a no go, but you could probably get a spinner in there without too much hassle.

I've been toying with the idea of building a second box for a dedicated 4-way and a spinner for years, but my setup works so well right now, I hate to mess with the feng shui.

If you want to be stuck to 8-way games.....

It would be nice to have a separate controller for every realistic configuration, but that's just a weeee bit out of price range. Still, I could dream:

4-player, 8-way, 4-6 buttons each.
dual 4-way sticks
spinner
trackball- 2 for games like Marble Madness
rotating sticks ala Ikari Warriors
Flight-style sticks with thumb buttons or triggers
Two steering wheels- one with full rotation, one limited (with force-feedback of course). Better yet, at least three of each (maybe just the full-rotation?) for multi-player games like Super Offroad and Super Sprint
Shifter and pedal to go with steering wheel.
Custom controllers for arcade favorites such as Star Wars or 720
.
.
.

Don't play the lottery, stuck in a $32K/year job... Oh well- a dream it shall remain.

I've actually been contemplating putting a Mag Stick Plus in my HotRod. I bought the T-Stik Plus (spring-centered) from Ultimarc a few years ago for a cabinet idea that went nowhere, and just picked up the Mag Stik Plus a month or so back (magnet-centered) just to see how it feels. The great thing about both these sticks are they're 4-way/8-way switchable with a rotating restrictor plate, switchable with a lift/twist of the stick, without having to go inside your panel. Awesome.

I definitely need real 4-way support for some games in MAME, otherwise it just feels too "loose".

That would come out a total disaster if all that was shoehorned onto the front of a single cabinet!
