I don't believe their explanation at the end is true at all. I think they set up the coins in a grid once (and possibly not even a complete grid), then the rest of the manipulation was done entirely on the computer.

Just watched it once... I didn't pay attention if they said they use a projector (projecting a prerendered picture) to know where to place the coins for the next frame... But I'm sure that's what they're doing.
