None of my gay friends have any desire to see Bert and Ernie marry. The whole thing is absurd. Sure people (gay and straight) JOKE about them being secretly gay lovers, but COME ON, they're FUCKING PUPPETS.
Personally, I think it's one of those situations where a group who is actually AGAINST gay rights is feeding fake stories to the media that make it appear that pro gay rights groups are actually fighting for Bert and Ernie to marry. The result is that there's a lot of backlash and it (at least in theory) sways people who may have been on the fence back to the anti gay rights side.
Joke about it sure. Hell, I've joked about it plenty myself. But I've never, EVER talked to anyone who actually wants them married, or even for them to just be gay. The general attitude is, "That's fucking ludicrous. They're best friends. Why can't a couple of guys just be best friends?!"
If anything the "LET B&E GET MARRIED!" thing is a pain in the ass. Acceptance and understanding from straight people who don't have a lot of actual contact with out gays is hard enough to earn. If they think that you're fighting for queer puppet sex on kids show...
I think it's indeed a mix of anti-gays pushing for it to cause strife AND the freaks pushing for it.
