*tangent*

"One of the fun aspects of a cartridge-based system is that you are literally plugging a PCB directly into your system. Thus, you can put extra coprocessors, often digital signal processors, right inside of the cartridge."

i dunno why, but i love this concept. it's just so foreign now with optical media relegating all processing functions to the console purely. i hope to see the return of cartridges someday... they destroy optical media in every possible regard other than prod cost. i would like to see some form of ssd cartridge in the future of console gaming.

I loved it too, but even with the N64, they were starting to make it harder to add more interesting hardware in carts. We can wish, but I really think massive enhancements like SuperFX building on the system are relegated to our memories.

The trend is even going into arcades now. Taito and Namco have systems where it's a PC in a cab that downloads new games over the web and can display a digital marquee for it etc. Sucks.

Arcades have been that way for a while now, PC based in some way. Updating via CD, USB, phone, cell phone, network...

I'd like to see a resurgence in traditional hardware as well, but the cost of making physical hardware as opposed to virtual updates on a generic platform is biased to the point it may never happen again.

I'm not talking about PC hardware and updates for games, this is something completely new this year, I don't even know if the Taito ones are past test location yet and I think the only Namco game doing it so far is the newest Tekken. I mean no more physical games, basically, not even a hard drive and dongle / kit. You buy a cab and it changes games over the web and stays online and there is no possible home collector market for them, you could never have them at home if they need an internet connection. And they will never be in MAME unless some ops copy the hard drives before each game update, which they won't.

Changing a title screen and adding a course rehash doesn't count. Sorry that your boss farted into your dickhole but it's not the same thing.

Just because they didn't utilize it properly doesn't mean it's any different. Hell, with those 2nd LCDs, they could have made Silver Strike, Golden Tee, or Bags hot swappable if they wanted to.

Not my problem they insist on shaping their cabinets like bowling pins to make it useful for nothing else...
