Anyone dealt with moving a king mattress before?
#261870 - 08/10/11 06:00 AM

My wife and I ordered a king mattress over the weekend, and now I have to figure out if we can actually get it into the bedroom. (She did all the research into it, but of course it's my fault if it doesn't fit.)

My only worry is the stairs to the upper floor. We have kind of a weird staircare with walls on both sides that ends in a doorway at the bottom. Clearance from the first step to the top of the doorway is about 74". What's really freaking me out is that the shortest distance between the 4th or 5th step and the top of the doorway is only about 48 1/2", which means I'm going to have to fold the sucker nearly in half to get it through. Once I'm through the doorway, I'm golden. The ceiling in the stairs is way high and the doorway at the top is at least 78".

It's a latex foam mattress, so hopefully it's a bit more flexible than a traditional one, but does anyone know if I have a prayer of getting this thing up the stairs? I can cancel the order now, but once we take delivery we can only get store credit for it. Which basically means I'll be sleeping by myself in the dining room on a great big mattress.

I can't say for sure in your case, but we had a similar issue with getting a queen up the steep ass stairs in our 90 year old house (same doorway issue). Folding the mattress was difficult, but do-able. Your arms are going to hurt like hell afterwards, so you might want to invest in a tow strap to assist in the folding.

The real problem for us was the box spring. I had to dismantle it hog ring by hog ring to get it up there. I think a king sits on two twin boxes normally, so you should be good on that front if you are using them.

I've never seen a matress that WASN'T flexible... box springs are another story, but ours (and most) king box springs are two twins.

You'lll like the king.. lots of extra play room.

Yeah, I had a similar problem with our king frame... the headboard wouldn't make the turn up a staircase either, had to cut the legs off... and then ironically moved away, so it never went up stairs anyway :\

I remember the movers had to do some bending to get the queen up there, but it wasn't too bad. I just hope we can get it up there without damaging it.

It's a platform bed, so I'm good on that front. If the mattress makes it, I'm done.

Here's a dirty little secret (I used to work in a furniture store) a lot of latex matts are actually innersprings with a layer of latex on top. Don't expect the salesperson to be upfront about it.

Yeah, I've noticed that furniture and especially mattresses are second only to cars when it comes to shady practices and dirty little secrets.

I ended up nixing the deal, anyway. I was trying to simulate the angle I would need to bend the mattress to with a tape measure, and it was looking like 90+ degrees to get past the narrowest point. It's probably doable with ratchet straps, but I'd be afraid to damage it. Even worse than not being able to get it upstairs would be to get it up there and end up with a mattress that looks like a taco.
