Light Gun Games
#257513 - 06/16/11 02:13 AM

Newbie to Mame here and for whatever reason have a lot of affection for the old laserdisc arcade games, maybe cause they were so expensive when I was in the arcades

Anyone have any success getting them to run in Mame with a light gun? Titles like Fast Draw Showdown, Point Blank, Mad Dog McCree, Area 51, Virtua Cop, etc. Would ideally like to mount an LCD TV on the wall dedicated to these and the other Mame games and hoping somebody can steer me in the right direction.

If you plan to use an LCD screen then you must use an LED-type gun controller with calibration bars. The old-style lightguns won't work since they specifically depend on CRT signals.

I do have a TopGun-based wireless gun controller, but in the year since acquiring it I haven't been arsed to dig it out and set it up.

Hmmm...wonder if they're playable on a tube set with old style guns?

as far as I know there's no way to hook up a real arcade light gun to a PC.
Gun games in MAME should work fine with the USB lightgun (sold by ultimarc) on a regular CRT screen.

Why is that?

Nobody loves light gun games?

I would love to use my 2 Top Guns in Mame, but I have to use consoles instead.....

Fast Draw Showdown and other LaserDisc games need their discs dumping before the driver can stand a chance of being playable.

Virtua Cop however needs more complete emulation.

So it sounds like Point Blank and Area 51 are the only ones you can use a light gun on in Mame for now. If anybody knows different chime in...

I guess I could always buy the PC versions of Mad Dog McCree (not sure about Fast Draw Showdown) and The House of the Dead 3 and run them out of XP...

A variety of light gun shooters work for MAME but they're mostly 2D 16-bit era shooters. Most of them are very quick and fun in my opinion. Rom set organization software like Romlister and front ends like MAMEUI and Hyperspin can show you what's available.

I think Area 51, Maximum Force, and MAYBE Crypt Killer (correct me on the status of that game) are the most relatively recent light gun games that are working (at least at a practical level) on MAME.

If you were hoping to play Virtua Cop, House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Crisis Zone, and other 32-bit era Sega, Namco, Konami light gun shooters on MAME than you're out of luck for a very long time unless you're willing to play a PC version which are usually available. I believe the PC version of a few of Sega's shooter in particular are in public domain now.

Time Crisis works fine, aside from minimal raphical errors, it's just a matter of CPU horsepower.

I cant remember details but at one point, Time Crisis was unplayable past helicopter level since you couldn't blow up the helicopter. Was that ever fixed?

No and yes. No in that it hasn't been solved, but yes it's still fully playable, you just need great accuracy. Shooting the middle of the helicopter's tail works, but other places it doesn't.

Has anyone gotten this work using Wiimotes?

I had once, but the games I wanted to play ran too slowly so I scrapped it.

Crypt Killer works fine if you have the CPU horsepower, AFAIK. I think Judge Dredd (also on PS1 h/w) does too.

Other working polygon light gunners include Point Blank, Point Blank 2, and Golgo 13.

How did you go about it? I tried it once but couldn't get the MAME to detect the Wiimote.

Once the blutooth is paired up, you need to get a program called GlovePIE. After that I told it to map the IR Camera movements to mouse movements exactly so it would work like on a Wii, there's a tab set for stuff like it for the non-techical. There's a fewguides floating aboutthe net. You'd need to set MAME to read mouse inputs (-mouse on the command line) and then usse mouse x+y on on the lightgun movement.

Thanks. I'll screw around with GlovePIE and see if I can get anything going.
