Supermodel WIP Update
#257082 - 06/11/11 11:16 PM

I've been too busy to work on Supermodel since April, but that hasn't stopped Nik Henson from contributing some excellent code. Here's a video of Abelardo, one of our play testers, using his XBox 360 controller to win a first place finish in Scud Race:

Nik has also managed to work out how the Z80-based drive board operates, meaning that Supermodel now has basic force feedback, but several details are still eluding him. If you own a Model 3 cabinet with servo drive boards, we'd like to get in touch with you.

More here.

Come on Bart, you have 30 minute a day to work on it, surely. There is still a lot of great games that haven't been emulated. All the people who have donated and contributed Model 3 boards will be disappointed if they don't get emulated. Thanks for the work you have done already anyway.

er, don't bother trying to convince the guy, it's annoying. Even if it was 'oh teh noes, kids in africa will starve if you don't work on it', it's still his choice on how to fill his free time.

Only contribute out of the goodness of your heart, expect nothing in return. Give to give, not to receive.

Yes that's correct. But i think people need to nag him just a little, it would be easy for someone to get bored with a project like that if people act like they don't care about it.

Yeah, just keep nagging him until he's sick of it and quits. Good plan

It'll be released when it's ready, of course It's not quite there yet. I've got other more important things to worry about this month. But what has been contributed by Nik so far is quite extensive and would have taken me much longer to do myself, so I'm quite pleased with how the emulator is progressing despite my absence.

In the spirit of nagging, I'm going to try to convince you to stop being an obnoxious asshole.

Shut the fuck up.

Given the type of graphics, why bother?

Batr that is absolutely fantastic news! Please tell NIK thank you very much for this initial porgress. Nik, if you're reading this, thnak you very much good sir! I have a question...

What is actually "basic" about the FFB? I mean, what specific force effects are missing? Spring? Sine? Wave? Sawtooth? Constant force? Just curious. I really hope you can iron out the issues. Because once ALL the force feedback effects are wroking I will be jumping for joy!!!!

3D games in the 90s shipped on CRT monitors just like everything else, and things like the shadow mask effect are very obvious on the real cabinets. (Indeed, it's part of why those early 3d graphics were tolerable). It actually makes good sense to include the HLSL effects on them.

Im sure that starting with Model 2, Sega started moving to rear projection type displays for the top end, money machines like Daytona and the rest, i've got quite a few old EDGE magazines, and in their Arcade section that they used to have, there are plenty of photo's of the luxury 'sit down' cabinets using pretty big screens, which clearly arent CRT's....although im sure the cut down 'stand up' cabs did still ship with CRT's...

I'll see if i can hunt them down, scan them, and post some here, to show what i mean...although i dont have the best of scanners....

The Sega/Namco 50" rear-projectors (I've played plenty of them) were CRT projectors, so they had the same basic characteristics as CRTs. And the non-deluxe cabinets definitely had CRTs right up in your grill, especially the sit-down versions of the driving games. (For some reason Scud Races tended to have really bad burn-in).

Alot of the big screen games weren't even RGB. The ones I worked on went through an NTSC converter on a damn composite cable to a standard Mitsubishi tv(deluxe my ass). The converter did have svideo also, just unused so that was an easy upgrade. This was on a factory original Air Combat and Tekken 3.

I can back that up - several System 22/23 games we bought for dumping the boards came with the composite encoder to use with the Mitsu TVs (which means that NTSC emulation is actually arcade-accurate, frighteningly enough). That little encoder board's not a bad thing to base a homebrew supergun on though

I have one. It works perfect for a lot of games, especially from that era, but it has more compatibility issues than one you could buy off eBay and you can't adjust the RGB so some games have wrong colors and brightness.
