Ok I downloaded several chds and lcds at work on the shop computer then I brought in my external portable harddrive and plugged it in and winxp finds it no probs and I transfered the smaller files over with no problems now I have a 4.9gig and firefox lcd that I try to copy over and I keep getting a disk full error and it wont copy over.
I have 14gigs free on shop computer and 690 gigs free on my external so I know that at least the 4.9 gig chd shouldn't be a problem.
I have tried drag and dropping it, I tried copy and xcopy at the command prompt from both the c drive (shop computer) and then went to the F: drive (external) and tried from there too but no matter how I try it tells me that I am out of disk space. windows and dos box both show 14 gigs free on c:drive and 689 Gigs free on f: drive.... I can only do this when the boss is out of town so I am limited on time LOL!!!
I don't know how else to get the file from one drive to the other.....
HELP !!! PLEASE !!!
Oh yeah fat32 both drives winxp P4 with 1 gig memory

There's the problem. FAT32 has a maximum file size limit of 4GB. Either split the file into chunks or reformat the external drive as NTFS and try again.

Firefox CHD is 11.7 GB, your problem is FAT32 as that only supports ~4GB iirc.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463 There are file size limits as well as partition size limits for drives using FAT32. I don't know how you got a file that is 4.9 gig on a FAT32, but that's not supposed to be possible. NTFS is the way to go..

The fat32 bit is getting you. There is a 4gig limit on file sizes in FAT32. NTFS has a much larger limit.
Your computer is probably formatted NTFS unless you upgraded it from win98. A lot of portable drives come formatted FAT32.
You can convert the drive to use NTFS by using the convert command. Or just reformatting it (if your data does not matter this is the way I usually go). If you need it to plug into something that only understands FAT32 you may be better off creating a couple of partitions on the drive. One FAT32 and one NTFS. Even then some devices are picky. But if you are just going to use it for XP computers then it is no big deal.

thanks guys !!!
Yeap shop computer is NTFS and F: is fat32 so I guess I will take my external drive home and convert to NTFS and wait for the boss to take another day out of town. LOL!!
Seriously though thanks to all of you....
One more thing. If I convert over will I lose all my files on the F: drive ? that's where all my mame files live and I would hate to have to start over with all those files....

The thread starter could also use ExFat/Fat64, but I hear that's better suited for flash drives.
