Quote:
The Singularity is the technological creation of smarter-than-human intelligence. There are several technologies that are often mentioned as heading in this direction.
They actually compare "The Singularity" that they're talking about to the basis of the term, the singularity that (theoretically) exists at the center of a black hole. Then they go on and on without saying:
The Singularity is the point at which the rate of technological advancement becomes functionally infinite.
See? Like the gravity in the black hole.
Generally, it is the point where all available mass is dedicated to that advancement, and is reached well after humans have become non-physical beings. That superhuman AI exist is a precondition of that.
The first sentence *could* be taken to mean this, that it is a thing created by a superhuman intelligence, but the second sentence seems to negate that interpretation.

There are multiple singularities... apparently.

Shouldn't there not even be a plural form for the word 'singularity'?

The Singularity is the point at which the rate of technological advancement becomes functionally infinite.
This is good.
Generally, it is the point where all available mass is dedicated to that advancement,
I wouldn't say this. That's beyond analogy, and in no way necessary.
and is reached well after humans have become non-physical beings. That superhuman AI exist is a precondition of that.
The first of this last bit is not an imminent factor in the scheme. 'Superhuman' is an irrelevant term; 'AI' is an incorrect one.

I'll give you most of that...
> 'Superhuman' is an irrelevant term;
"Superhuman" means above what a human can achieve. In this context, it means "exceeding human-level intelligence." The article used a series of words, "smarter-than-human intelligence," when there is this single word which means that.

Not to great a nec....
Now. I don't even consider myself 'human'. But let's put that aside. The point of import here is that there is use of static (and species-centric) terms to imbue something with definition. 'Singularity' has nothing to do with consciousness, but instead capacity.
