It's not March 31st Fool's Day and I don't think he has time for anything so elaborate so it appears to be real.

For the PC Version, this requires a patch to play on Vista/7. Another option is to get the dos version and play in DOSbox.

That description title is 99.99999% there imo.

If either of those two do get supported/preserved this year, that would be another unexpected find. As before, getting Sega's California Games supported this year makes it a good year so far. I was still going with guess that maybe California Games never existed since the game name wasn't printed on any current online flyers.

Unbelievably awesome. MKT was my first PSX game.

If it does get dumped, it will be fantastic. Better fidelity than the N64 version, no load times like the PSX version.

I'm drooling just thinking about it.

And mega props to the mystery programmer/seller. Definitely a decent guy to throw in a one-off prototype to Terry.

HOLY FUCK. That MKT Proto looks way real and awesome.

Its a shame he cut the video at the end of the demo! I wanted to see how the character select screen looked

I cant wait to see more documentation and info about this thing! I never knew that MKT started as an arcade!

Kinda remembers me of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1a844rxBFE

Maybe that's the version he has? I'd love if it is!

Edit: I have been checking dates too:
"1/14/96" (Proto showed here)

MK Trilogy was released for the PSX on October 13th, 1996.

Now, the strange thing about this...is that according to a statement (dunno who made it though):

"MK3 Rides The Wave... Introducing WaveNet MK3!

(Last updated: August 9th, 1996) It's obvious in today's gaming world that people love long-distance competition. X-Band, DWANGO, and the other numerous gameing networks are evidence of this. And don't forget all the games that support net/modem play, DOOM, Descent, and basically every new game, to name just a few. Up until now, Mortal Kombat players have been confined to playing only against someone in the same room as you. Now all that will change. Now there is WaveNet MK3. WaveNet MK3 is in testing in Chicago, and allows you to play MK3 against someone else at another arcade in your area! When you start WaveNet MK3, you get a new screen, asking you whether you want to play WaveNet or Local. Select WaveNet and you'll be thrown into a whole new dimension of MK3. You type in a name you want to use, and then it looks for someone at another arcade waiting to play. It'll either find someone or put you back in Local mode while it continues to search. Once it finds someone, you'll start playing against them. Now you can really prove yourself as an MK3 warrior!
In addition to WaveNet MK3, there are also twelve WaveNet UMK3 machines in testing in Chicago. These have all the normal UMK3 fighters, plus one more hidden fighter -- Noob Saibot."

This is the article about Wavenet...That means that Trilogy was developed with/at the same time of Wavenet.

Wavenet ended on the arcades as an update, Trilogy went to the consoles for the home market, however both games were developed "on top" of UMK3 I suppose.

If this port is the real thing, it MUST have the "old-UMK3-like" character select screen. Mostly because the PSX Beta images for MKT did had that screen. The "final" char select was changed a little later in the development progress (Also, there were lots of scrambled portraits before the final of course).

Holy crap. This stuff definitely needs to be preserved-- I don't think ANYONE had any idea they were even considering an arcade edition of Trilogy, and the NBA Jam find is pretty damn rare in itself.

Too bad the PC side of the whole mess is missing, though. Maybe we'll find one somewhere yet.

To mk fans like myself the exciting thing is that this arcade version would probably have the characters at their full resolution. The console and pc versions of this game had a decent amount of compression and omitted a lot of sounds and animations.

Of course (and assuming this vid isn't a fake) it's prototype status could mean that it's only in a psuedo-playable state.

Then again, I don't think anyone was even aware the midway thought of releasing a arcade version of mkt, so this needs preserved.

Raiden is spelt with an I like it should be, as opposed to 'Rayden' on the consoles [nt] new [Re: Pr3tty F1y]
#250506 - 04/01/11 03:35 PM

> Look at 6:48 through the video

It also lacks the low resolution look of the PSX/N64 versions. Only time will tell though.

Things exclusive to the console versions, which should not be on the arcade:

Raiden spelt with a Y.
Selectable Shao Kahn/Motaro/Kintaro/Goro (not selectable on the N64, except for the MK3 bosses via a cheat code).
A non-solid-black Noob Saibot (e.g. a dark version of Human Smoke).
No usage of the standard Midway/Wiliams test font in the 1P/2P/8P menu like the PSX version uses.
A semi-transparent life bar (arcade is dithered red/transparent pixels when you get hit).

If someone can hack the shitty Genesis version of UMK3 into 'Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy', why can't they do the same on the arcade? It's a perfect candidate for MiSFiTMAME.

They could've developed the arcade and psx versions side-by-side, so the arcade version may have a newer character select. We won't know until the guy makes videos or dumps and releases the data.

Man, this feels like the 90s. Mortal Kombat is everywhere, it's campy, it's disgustingly gory, and its awesome. If this is not an April 1st joke, then it couldn't possibly be timed better, with MK9 on the horizon.

And followed by that, Duke Nukem Forever is getting released. Man, 2011 sure as hell rocks so far.

I didn't play anything, I was tricked too. I can't stand April Fools and the internet has gayed it out to the point now where apparently March 30-31 are now fair game too. If you're going to do it, at least keep it on April 1st, preferably with comedy intertwined. Not shatter your hopes and F you in the A in late March carried over into early April.

So hang on, is the online version of NBA Jam a fake too or was it just MKT and NBA is actually real then? - Seems like a lot of trouble to go to to fake NBA while I guess he just ran a home version of MKT and made it look like it was running from a cab but for NBA he's hvae to completely fake title screens and junk...

I think the PC did the network part and there was also a sever at midway. So if we find the pc code (likey will work in dosbox or some other pc emu) with out the sever part it will be much.

UMK3 wave net used T1 lines and may of used a PC + the MK board but why use all that hardware when DOS MK had networking.

Wavenet added new stuff and it game worked in local mode even when the network was down / not working.

It was cool for the time. I played it a lot at River Rand Bowl - Des Plaines, IL a few other arcades also had it and I even saw places like fuddruckers in the site list shown in game.

But this was dial up? he needs to post some picks of boards?

San Francisco Rush 2049: Tournament Edition had local networking and external server (wavenet?) usesing T1 lines.

I have some posts from some who worked at WMS at the time from a other forum.

http://web.archive.org/web/2007092802514...Kombat+Wave+Net

that where copied to a newer forum

http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=129&hl=wavenet

"WAVENet was never publicly released. There were tests in Chicago and the San Francisco area on UMK3 and Rush 2049. It ran over a T1 line that was directly connected back to Midway HQ in Chicago.

It's highly unlikely any of those test games were ever sold to the public after WAVENet was dismantled so it's unlikely the ROMs are out there. You would be better off playing vanilla MK3 via a MAME networking kit like Kaillera."

"
Yes. That was one of the reasons WAVENet didn't really take off. This was long before the age of cablemodems and DSL. T1 was the only guaranteed way to get broadband into an arcade.

Times have changed, but it still is kind of hard to get net service in a lot of places. The internet jukeboxes are starting to drive the adoptance of broadband, which is a good sign."

"I was working on the pinball side at the time (although we had a WAVEnet unit to play with in our offices).

If I recall correctly, the game didn't use much of the T1. Midway picked up the cost of the line during the tests. You can get a T1 installed anywhere you want, as long as you pay what Ameritech wants. It's just a dedicated copper pair that's specially installed at the telco."

Good explanation video from a cool guy with a unique perspective on Midway and its games. Notwithstanding the "day before April fools" issue, I'm confused by all the sour grapes people had over his joke. You've got to admit it was highly clever, took some serious thought, and is uncommon even for the time of year.

Plus, with all the enthusiasm he shows for these games you'd think it was 1994 again, when people lined up at the arcade for a chance to topple the local MK2/3 champ. Whether he intended it or not, his video goes beyond a display of "smoke" and mirrors - in a way it helps to breathe new life and increase awareness of some very nice games of the era. I get that, and I dig it.

In the end, Terry's extremely MAME friendly and obviously well-connected. That should be taken as a blessing - people like that aren't exactly falling from the trees.
