Best way to record gameplay

I'm looking for a way to record game footage from my cab with little to no impact on game play. I have multiple emulators and locally installed PC games so Fraps isn't always a good option.
Would it be better to get some hardware to record the screen?
I don't want it to be as low tech as pointing a camera on the screen though.
Suggestions?

Unfortuately most of them still require you to pay to get all of the features. http://www.gamecamportal.com/ allows unlimited recording with no sound for the free version, while http://www.wegame.com/ will record with sound, but only at half the resolution if you don't pay.

I haven't used it in a while, so I don't know how resource intensive it is, but Camstudio is still free.

Is there no way to plug your computer into an LCD TV and have a DVD player / recorder record from it's stream? Never tried it myself like...
