New phone contract: 3G or 4G?

I'm looking at:
- Evo Shift (4G), with Sprint (Sprint is supposed to have their 4G network available locally next month)
- LG optimus (3G), with T-Mobile
Including plans, discounts, etc, they come up costing the same.
I mostly will use it for phone and text, with some occasional surfing. Don't at all care about apps, the market, etc.
Does anybody have any experience with these phones/services, or just general commentary, they'd like to share?

Funny. We had a rotary dial phone in my house. Yellow banana-lookin thing.
