Aim-Trak Mounting

I have two questions about mounting the Aim-Trak board in a cabinet. The mounting instructions on Ultimarc's website say to mount the board on the top of the monitor / cab and gently bend the the LEDs down until they approximately match where the gun sensor will be.
I don't know if this makes a difference but can the board be mounted below the monitor and the LEDs be bent up to match the gun sensor?
Also does anyone know if the LED board can be mounted behind smoked glass or other dark material to hide it?

The board has to be on the top of the monitor or the gun will think you're always pointing above the screen.
You can use any translucent material aslong as IR light can pass through it. Just grab a digital camera and you'll see if it can when the LEDs are lit.
