Take your favorite horizontal shooter and rotate the display to be vertical and then reassign the d-pad directions to up is left, left is down etc. and cold leet your nuts off.

Nope, only one on SNES. IIRC there were several on the 8-bit Game Boy series though.
Speaking of which, it's not SNES but I recommend Shantae for the Game Boy Color. It's a "Metroidvania"-style game that looks absolutely amazing for a GBC game. It sounds great too--the music was done by chiptune deity Jake "virt" Kaufman.
It came out right at the end of the GBC's short lifespan, so a lot of people missed it.

if only there were a video somewhere showing such a setup...
Actually I haven't done it with my supergun, but I could by swapping 4 wires around because they are alligator clipped. I've done it a few times with MAME though.
